NEW YORK, NY [NY1] — New York City Transit announced last night that it has put its lost and found department on the web.

Riders who have left something behind on a subway or bus can go to MTA.info and then go to “Travel” under the NYC Transit tab. The site features drop-down menus, with options to describe the item, when it was lost, and on which subway or bus line.

If something turns up, the MTA will email the owner.

Under the old system, a customer who lost something had to make multiple phone calls or visits to the MTA’s Lost Property Unit if they hoped to retrieve it.

Last year, the unit took in 19,000 lost items, but less than half of those items were claimed by their owners.

Transit officials say they hope the new system will help reunite more owners with their lost property.
