BROOKLYN, NY [NY1] — With winter comes snow and ice, and of course, potholes.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the department of transportation commissioner were in Brooklyn Monday to announce that the pothole-filling season is in full swing.
Brooklyn has the most reported cases of potholes in all five boroughs. However, more than 6,000 miles of city streets are affected by winter weather.
On any given day, there are up to 40 department of transportation crews out filling potholes around the city.
In the last five weeks, more than 20,000 potholes have been filled.
“The bottom line is, in 2002 before 311 came on line, only about two-thirds of potholes got filled within a month of being reported. Today, they’re filled within three days of being reported, so it’s an enormous difference,” said Bloomberg.
In an effort to be green, the city uses recycled asphalt to fill some of the holes.
