City Suspends Alternate Side Parking, Preps For Storm
NEW YORK, NY [NY1] — The city has suspended alternate side parking rules Friday in preparation for snow removal crews.
Parking meters, however, remain in effect throughout the city.
The MTA is advising commuters to use mass transit instead.
Meanwhile, the city says it’s ready for Friday’s impending snow storm as New Yorkers stock up on supplies.
Customers at a Lowe’s in Brooklyn bought shovels and bags of salt earlier in the day.
The storm is expected to hit Friday morning and continue into the evening commute.
The MTA said it has a fleet of equipment to keep outdoor tracks, switches and third rails dry from the snow and ice.
Transit officials said the stairs leading to all 468 subway stations will be shoveled and salted.
The Port Authority also said there will be extra personnel on duty working around the clock in 12-hour shifts.
“Our staff is trained and ready, we began in August preparing for this very day, the staff is stoked and we’re ready to go,” said Thomas Bosco, Head of Operations and Security, LaGuardia Airport.
“I want to urge everybody to stay off the roads. If you can’t, if you have to travel, take mass transit,” said Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
More than 4,000 tons of salt is on hand to melt ice off bridges, tunnels and airport runways.
