Circling for Parking Wastes Gas, Harms Environment

Newsday

NEW YORK, NY — New York City drivers waste hundreds of thousands of miles just looking for a parking space.

That’s the finding of a new study by the group Transportation Alternatives.

The study estimates that circling for a space burns $130,000 a year in gas _ not to mention about 50,000 hours of the drivers’ time. And the resulting emissions hurt the environment.

Assemblywoman Linda B. Rosenthal is urging the city’s Department of Transportation to explore changes in the parking meter system.

Transportation Alternatives says higher metered parking rates during peak hours might boost turnover and create more vacancies. It says that could ease congestion and reduce double-parking.

are you kidding me?? thats your answer make it more expensive????!!! hello if its costing money and hurtung the environment dont you think the solution would be to reduce circling by making more parking.

to Avraham: how exatcly are they going to make more parking i mean they can destroy your house and use that but you get the point. the real answer is getting a Hybrid car. it uses elctric and a little gas. the Toyota Hybrid can go 43 miles on one gallan of gas now thats the answer to gas issue’s and Global warming. (exuse my spelling im a Oholai torahnick.

  • street cleaning

This is the dumbest idea ever. If a person needs the spot, they’re not going to move rather than pay an extra dollar. Consider the cost of gas and insurance and realize that parking meters are not where the expense lies.
I would say street cleaning causes a lot of circling. Half the neighborhood is illegal parking at any given time of day.

    To smarty pants:

And how much exactly does that Tayota Hybrid cost??

It may be better for the environment, but after ten years of owning a hybrid, the cost still won’t even out (even with the expense of gas) to owning a regular car.

how about something like underground parking, or parking lots with many stories, in every neighborhood, FOR FREE?!?!

  • suggestion?

why doesn’t a capable somebody do something with the big empty lot by Carrol & Troy?
Even if you have to walk and even if it takes forever to turn it into a parking area isn’t is worth it??

The cost of that ”Tayota” Hybrid (Prius) is now $32,000 even though the sticker is less than 23,000.

Used Priuses from 2004 can’t be had for less than about 18,000 dollars, or you can get a salvage one on e-bay for $15,000.

They went up around $8,000 almost overnight.

I hope this forces all those Hummer, Escalade and Suburban people to reconsider their transportation options. Getting 3 miles to the gallon is no longer an option.

First they dont realize that raising all city fees cost the city businesses. Second There is no reason that on some blocks there cant be horizontal parking on one side. They have that on President and Utica and in many other areas in the city like Williamsburgh and it works to everyones advantage.
