First Shliach
Rabbi Matosuf OBM was indeed a great person who did many great things, however for the Redord, the Rebbe’s first Shliach was Rabbi Michoel Lipsker O"H who was sent to Morroco. see Igrros Kodesh Vol 4 20 Shvat 5710. the letter was sent by the Rebbe only 10 days after Yud Shvat, and is in fact the very first Letter the Rebbe sent after the Histalkus of the Frierdiker Rebbe. may bboth of their memories be for a blessing
(I do believe however that Rabbi Matusof was the first Shlaich to stay in casablancac (Rabbi Lipsker moved asfter a short while from casablanca to Meknes))

First Shliach
Reb Michoel Lipsker was sent by the Rebbe! the Rebbe told him that the Frierdiker Rebbe had in mind to send him (in the early days after Yud Shvat, the Rebbe said many things in the name of the Friediker Rebbe so as not to accept the Nesius of on himself, but the fact is that the Rebbe was the one who approached Reb Mchoel and sennt him) I quoted the letter in Iggros where the topic is first brought up and t is from the Rebbe – 10 Days after the Histalkus.

is that mordechai merozow (melbourne) in the background?
when was the photo taken??
setting the record straight
Actually there was an entire debate on this matter in one of the major Chabad publications several years ago with quotes from Igors Kodesh to both Shluchim and the summary of that article was that indeed Reb Michoel a’h was appointed by the Previous Rebbe and was notified by the Rebbe of the Previous Rebbe’s intention and asking him to take up the position, while Reb Shlomo a"h was appointed and chosen by the Rebbe himself and asked by the Rebbe on his own behalf to go to the same country and to be the Head Shliach of that particular country.
The Rebbe continued to say things in the name of the Previous Rebbe for the entire duration of his Nesius, so why in his letter to Reb Shlomo asking him to go to Morocco, did he not do it in the name of the Previous Rebbe as He did in the letter to Reb Michoel?
The answer is simple, because Reb Michoel’s appointment was actually discussed between the Previous Rebbe and the Rebbe, while Reb Shlomo’s appointment was not.
This does not in any way take away from the special Chashivus of Reb Michoel or the fact that Reb Michoel was the first Shliach to move out during the Nesius of the Rebbe, but the fact remains that Reb Shlomo was actually and for the record, the first Shliach to be chosen and asked by the Rebbe to go out on Shlichus.

Yes, that is. The picture was taken at the wedding of Rabbi Matusof’s grandson, who is his cousin.
