Boruch Dayan Hoemes: Mrs. Devorah Gutnick, 85, OBM

With sadness we inform you of the passing of Mrs. Devorah Gutnick, OBM, veteran and active member of the Chabad community in Melbourne, Australia. She was 85 years old.

Devorah was born to Rabbi Avrohom and Zelda Feiglin in Melbourne in 1929. She is the granddaughter of Rabbi Moshe Zalman and Leah Feiglin, who was the first Lubavitcher Chossid to settle in Australia in 5672/1912. Reb Moshe Zalman Feiglin was given the title of “Avraham Avinu of Australia” by the Lubavitcher Rebbe.

In 1957, at the Rebbe’s direct request, Mrs. Gutnick founded a local chapter of N’shei Chabad, which she led with diligence for many decades, spearheading various initiates and organizing weekly Shiurim for women. Much correspondence regarding this is printed in Igros Kodesh.

She is survived by her husband, Rabbi Sholom Dov Ber Gutnick; their children: R’ Motty Gutnick (Melbourne), R’ Meyer Gutnick (New York), R’ Moshe Gutnick (Los Angeles) and R’ Yossi Gutnick (Melbourne); as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

R’ Meyer Gutnick will be sitting Shiva in his home at 829 Montgomery St. Selichos – 9:00am. Shachris – 9:30am. Mincha – 7:00pm. Maariv – 8:00pm.
