With sadness we inform you of the passing of Reb Zeev Volf Nisnevitch at the age of 99. Reb Zeev Volf, a longtime Crown Heights resident, merited to see three Rabbeim in his lifetime, and fought in the underground to bring Jewish education to children in communist Russia.

Before escaping from Russia in 1973, Reb Zeev Volf merited to see the Rebbe Rashab at the age of 3. As a Shliach of the Frierdiker Rebbe in the 1930s and 40s he spread yiddishkiet and Chassidus in the Russian underground, enabling Jewish education to continue in the face of communism and oppression.

Reb Zeev Volf settled in Israel with his family, and later transplanted to America where he became a big supporter of F.R.E.E.

He is survived by his children: Luba Goldschmid (Lod, Israel), Fania Rogatsky (Crown Heights), Ella Chein (Crown Heights), Esther Chein (Crown Heights), Laizer Nisnevitch (Marlboro, NJ) and Alex Nisnevitch (Crown Heights).

The Levaya will take place today, Wednesday; it will be leaving from the Shomrei Hadas Chapels at 12:00pm and passing by 770 at around 1:00pm.

The family will be sitting Shiva at 652 Montgomery Street [between Kingston and Brooklyn Ave.]

had gotten to know rabbi Nisnevitch while working at Brod & Goldshmid butchers – a very quiet, kind gentleman, always a nice word for me when he came into the store to see Chaskel Brod.

Having lived in Russia under Soviet regime Reb Nisenevitch appreciated being able to raise children with freedom to grow to be chassidishe kinder. He once saw my father walking with his sons(who were BH chassidisher bochurim..He said to my father “ az m’zet azelcher chassidishe bochurim darf man tantzin in gaas” Translation: When you see and have the zchus to have chassidishe kinder , you should dance in the streets” A true chossid.
