The Rebbe and the previous Rebbe playing a game of chess.

Just a reminder that tonight is “Nittel Nacht” and the custom is that we don’t learn as to not be “adding Chayus”.

The Rebbe says in a Sicha that we shouldn't “waste our time” but involve ourselves in something like chess which exercises the mind or any other chore that needs to be done. And the Rebbe related a story in the Sicha where a Bochur would save all the sewing of the buttons on his cloths to “Nittel Nacht” to be productive in a “non Adding Chayus” way.

So good luck in those chess games!

btw the picture is not of nittel. there has been extensive resarch… it is when the friediker rebbe was in datche.

did the rebbe say we should be really play chess? I’ve head that the rebbe never said such a thing and he personally did not play chess on chanukah so i would like to see some feedback on this issue.

The sicha was nittel nacht 5750.
The main point was that on nittel, a person should be “mitzair pnei rabboi” (think of the image of his Rebbe).

wow !!! it was like yesterday when the pic . came about we were selling them

No one ever wrote here that the picture was no nittel, and dosent take to much research to open up the sefer yemei bereishis and see the picture with what it says under it (that it was in datch), which was by the way mughe by the Rebbe (and came out in a teshurah several years ago)

adding clarity: I believe you are right, the doctors demended that the Rebbe Rayatz must rest and did not permit him to study Torah as it was taking a lot of his internal energy and he was very weak at that time. But Rebbe Rayatz could not resist learning Torah so the Rebbe would try to convince him to play chess with him.

Unsure: I believe the Rebbe suggest playing chess because, while it is bitul torah, it is not bitul zman since it developes brain – that could be used for torah btw.
