R’ Sholom Ber Goldschmid was an unusual Chassidishe Yid who was told by the Rebbe to open a butcher shop together with R, Chatzkel Brodt so that anash in Crown Heights would have reliable meat. He used to do lots of chesed with this shop so that Yidden would always have meat for shabbos – based on a directive of the Rebbe. Poor people would order meat on credit, and he would write down a small amount on their accounts and never collect the bills. He told me last month that these Chassodim never ended up hurting him.

When he came to NY from Israel he received tremendous Kiruvim from the Rebbe. Long after the Rebbe became Rebbe, he could knock on the Rebbe’s door and go in when he wanted to. The Rebbe gave him many horoois in his life including how to go on dates etc. He once asked the Rebbe at the end of a Yechiddus “Bameh Zochisee ? – Why was I zoiche to such kiruvim?” The Rebbe gave him a penetrating look and said “ A father and a Rebbe do what they have to do. (In your case)I did what I Had to do”.

I dearly loved this man whom I got to know in Rabbi Shain’s shul, and will miss him greatly.

My nichumim to Moshe (a former classmate from Bedford and Dean) and Shmidy who sometimes came to his father in Shul and had lots to tell as well.

i work in the butcher store for 15+ years with both reb brod and reb goldshmid —

rabbi goldschmid never said anything bad about anyone and only looked for the good in each.

i remember a few times i was asked to try and get some money from a customer who had a very large bill. this customer answered with this comment “we just bought a house, how do you expect me to pay my bill?”

instead of getting angry at the customer for their nerve – he told me to make sure that had just enough chicken and cholent meat for shabbos and nothing extra.

i told the woman she could have chicken and fleish – she picked out what she needed, however when it came time to pay, rabbi goldschmid would not take her money and told her to use it for other bills this week.

rabbi goldschmid will be greatly missed

When my husband could not find work R. Goldshmid cave us credit – for 3 years. At some point I felt bad asking him for credit and stopped coming in. He called me, and told me to come in and take what I need and not worry about it. I was very happy to pay all the money back when I could finally do it.
He never made us feel bad, instead he encouraged us and always had a kind word.

Rabbi Goldshmids father Moshe HY”D and Rabbi Benzion Goldshmid (grandfather of most of the Israli branch of the Goldshmid’s) were brothers

I was privileged to meet Rav Sholom a number of years ago here in Hebron. We hosted him in our home and invited him to attend and speak at the 75th anniversary of the Hebron massacre. He was a very righteous man who continued to love Hebron with all his heart and soul. I will miss him.
I hope he will stand before Ribono Shel Olam and ask for true peace for Eretz Yisrael and especially for residents and visitors in Hebron. Zichro l’vracha.
