A monarch decided that he would set aside a day and give honor to the greatest of his subjects. On the specified day, people form all walks of life gathered in the palace garden. Amid the cheers of his subjects, the king sat down on his throne and instructed the various groups of citizens to present their candidates.

First to be presented was a man of immense wealth. It was told that he gave much of his wealth to the less fortunate.

A doctor was then presented with the words that he was a faithful servant to all in need.

A famous lawyer was introduced with the words that he was a fair judge and was famous for his wise decisions.

Finally, an old, poorly dressed man was led to the front. Looking into his eyes one can see love, loyalty, and understanding.

"Who is this?" demanded the monarch.
"This, O King," was the immediate answer, "is their teacher."

Rabbi Barnetsky led a very full life. He will be greatly missed. I thank him for teaching me and believing in me; when others might have not.

    THANK YOU!!!

    just to clarify:

Rabbi Barntzky was one of ten students who sat down to learn on that very morning, when the Frierdiker Rebbe announced we is starting a Yeshivas Tomchei Tmimim in America.

He continued in Yeshivas Tomchei Tmimim throughout his bochurhood and later became a teacher. He taught many of our fathers and grandfathers in Bedford and Dean and later continued in Ocean Parkway.

In his later years, instead of teaching, he would tutor boys who were having trouble in class. I was one of those many boys.

    Thank you Rabbi Barnetzky.

from all the rebbe’s i had in the whole lubavitcher yeshiva system (and i should say that i was my whole student years in the system)he was by far the best rebbe.he went out of his way to make a talmud feel that they were special and build up there esteem to be a productive person.rebbe had the forsight for this and i know that there is not one person who was in bedford and dean or ocean pkwy who would say diffrent.this men’ch has a direct pass to gan’eden.if you were to look up what men’ch ment in the dictionary his picture would be there. it is a great loss and ha’shem needs him now

My sons adored Rabbi Barnetzky…such a gentle man, such a wonderful teacher. He is truly irreplaceable as a Mechanech. I had the privilege of interviewing him a number of years ago. As a teacher I recognize his greatness. No rebbe/Morah in today’s system can come close to having his depth of compassion & love for children.

We are so sad. Baruch Dayan HaEmes. Lubavitch is the poorer with this loss.

rabbi barnetsky taught me for 6 years (class tuthering – back in uly ocean parkway) he was a real person you could look up to for guidence (a real mashpia, role model etc etc…) and he will truly be missed by me, and so many others.

rabbi barnetsky: i love you,i miss you, and i will make sure to never forget you.

I had the zchus to be taught by rabbi rarnetzky 12 years. One thing that I remember was that whatever he taught us, he was always clear, and it was difficult not to concentrate… Also i remember how he would tell us how he used to be a pitcher for the Brooklyn Dodgers!

Our family was Zoche to have Rabbi Barnetzky as a Rebbe. My dad had him in Bedford and Dean, and he was a rebbe to myself and my 2 brothers. He always had a kind word to say. Our family stayed in touch with him and were zoche to be close to him in his later years. He epitomized great pedagogy in leading by example. He considered every neshoma "special" and invested his time and energy in each of his students. He would always inquire about our families and he was so POSITIVE. Always.

He was mild mannered and you would never believe that during the 1960’s when the Yeshiva Bochrim were under attack by local youths, he came running down Bedford Ave with chains swinging in his hands, screaming "leave my kinderlach alone".

In his over 50 years of being a melamed in Tomche Temimim, he touched the lives of thousands of us.

Do you know what gave him Nachas? Anything that you would say to him!!!
He would then respond, "Kol Tuv Sela".

    Rebbe, thank you for everything.

    Boruch Dayan Ha’emes!
What a loss, this man was the real thing, as real as it get’s, being a student of his, i remember that EVERYBODY loved Rabbi Barnetsky, you put the biggest trouble maker in Rabbi Barnetzky’s class and the boy was Botul before him, everyone respected him for what he was, so dedicated, he was always so jolly, i remeber so well his popcorn, his beautiful ‘lidelach’ (songs) he sould sing with us all the time, his beautiful and kind heart, his delicious way of teaching Gemara, there is just so much to say about Rabbi Barnetsky, i remember distinctly one time that on his way from/to Yeshiva (O.P.) he fell tripped and got hurt, i remember him coming back to Yeshiva with his bruised nose (he was no young man) and face the same jolly as he left Yeshiva, singing the same sweet songs as before, he was just just such a good man. We all love Rabbi Barnetsky, may we have many more like him!
P.S. someone mentioned above that he would tutor boys who had trouble learning, actualy everybody would go to Rabbi Barnetsky in shifts, all do to the fact that everybody loved going to him!
    V’hkitzu V’ran’nu Shocnei Ofor-V’hu B’socham-B’korov Mamash!

    My favorite teacher.
    A true Chosid
Rabbi Barnetzky will always be remembered.
    Go (Brooklyn) Dodgers!

  • Former 841 Student

Rabbi Barnetsky truely cared about his students..

Not only did he care about his students.. but when you were learning with him.. you were the only student he had.. you were the only person in the world for that time.. he really cared!!

He will live on throught that little spark he planted in us..

I am still looking for the greenish bluish candies that he gave out after a semi-private class back in 841..

If he was 100 years old over 15 years ago.. how old was he when he passed?

  • Former Talmid

Me and my family used to bring our not yet religous family to him every year. To show them what a real jew is. Every time we brought them they were extremely impressed and inspired.

As a former talmid myself, usually when a man gets old, he starts becoming very grouchy. However, when i had him about ten years ago, he was more besimchah then most ten year olds these days.

What i also remember is, how he sung to us a song, " How oh good it is to be a Yid, Oh how oh good is to be a yid". While we were young we did not really appreciate what it means at such an age to be happy and proud to be a Yid.

I am former student of Rabbi Barnetsky @Bedford & Dean. Even though I am now 60 the impression he made upon my life has been everlasting. 16 years ago he recognized me in the Swan Lake shul during the summmer when I was in avilus for my father. I did’t know any of his family members but I would like to take to extend my sympathies and just say that there is a generation today that has succeeded in torah & busniess which he nutured back in the 1950’s. BTW what ever happened to Hank Beck & Bernie Shickman…and Arthur Rubin?

    Rabbi Barnetsky
was more then a techer he made you into the person you should be, the excitment he gave us in learning is what i have all these years he was mechanech a genartion who are now mechnchim, if we were only like him who cared and never looked down on a child and gave each child love and excitment in learning we would be better off.
he did not do it as a job he did his teaching because he loved to teach and to see his children grow we should all learn from him.
    Chaval al devadin velo mishtachkin.
rabbi barnetsky: i love you,i miss you, and i will make sure to never forget you. be a umed umeshesh bammorom on all the children you were mechanech in this world

It must have been late 1983 when I was about to complete the fourth grade at 841. In a word, my year was not filled with joy. I took comfort in knowing that the following year would be spent in the fifth grade with the “Rebbi” Rabbi Barnetsky. As I neared the end of a much nonproductive year, very much to my chagrin, I recall discovering that the fifth grade rebbi was being switched to the third grade. I was completely broken hearted, non amenable. I made the decision to forfeit my promotion to the fifth grade and I requested to be demoted to the third grade. Most of the ULY student and faculty body thought I was deranged. Anyone who had the experience of Rabbi Barnetsky understood. In retrospect to my third grade experience with the great rebbi, I made the smartest decision of my life. I am deeply saddened by the passing of this great human being. I will never forget what he has given and done for me. As my father was his student as well as myself, I just wish my son could of experienced the same.
    Sincerely,

Yacov, A New York Physician Asst.

  • GurAryeh Herzig

My name is Aryeh Herzig. I live in Borough Park.
I had Rabbi Barnetsky in the third grade about fifty years ago in the yeshiva on Grant Square.
He was so special and kind. Probably the best rebbi I had.
I brought my children to get brochos from him.
I will never forget this wonderful, wonderful Yid.
His kindness will always be an inspiration.
Tzidkaso Omedess Lo’ad. He has indirectly and directly influenced tens of thousands of Yidden for the good.
