His First Mezuzah – Mivtzoim in Yehupitzvil

You thought Yehupitz was a mythical place. It isn’t. It’s in Hastings, Minnesota, a twenty minute drive from the Yeshiva High School of the Twin Cities in Cottage Grove, Minnesota. As Yehupitz’s go, this one doesn’t have many if any Jews. And out of this Yehupitz came Deke, a Coffee shop owner whose Jewish name is Chaim Branchaud-Linsk, a Jew from North Minneapolis.

When Deke heard of the Yeshiva, he made a point to come over for a visit. He met Lubavitch 25 years ago when he spent several weekends at Shabbatons with Rabbi Manis Friedman and Rabbi Moshe Feller. He wanted to know if the yeshiva would visit the coffee shop and sing some Jewish songs. Over time, Deke has become very good friends with the Yeshiva. The bochurim have visited often, and Deke always stops what he’s doing and spends some time farbrenging with them.

On Monday, after a nice schmooze with Rabbi Yosef Eizicovics, Deke was excited to have a mezuzah put up on the front door of his store. On Monday, Rabbi E. and some bochurim drove down to Hastings, and in a small ceremony, Deke became the first person in Hastings to have a mezuzah on his business’ front door!

Lovely story, but why did it take 25 years before they put up a Mezuzah? Didn’t anybody notice there wasn’t one?
