Merkos Shlichus – a Kiwi Success!

Canterbury, New Zealand [CHI] — Fourteen Rabbinical Students returned to the Chabad headquarters in Canterbury, after spending their Pesach in various cities throughout the island, organizing sedorim, distributing Matzah, Kosher wine, and other Pesach essentials. “It was a success far beyond all our expectations!” says Rabbi Shmuel Kopel; director of Chabad of Otago, who helped coordinate the island wide Shlichus.

“Some 21,000 Israeli backpackers tour the country each year,” says Mrs. Sara Goldstein, Co-Director of Chabad of New Zealand, “Everyone feels at home here, and many find it difficult to leave”.

In the past twelve months the Chabad Houses in New Zealand have seen an exponential increase in the number of inquiries for essential Jewish services both from travellers as well as locals.

Support for Pesach has come from Rabbi Yosef Yitzchok and Stera Gutnick, and Rabbis Moshe and Mendel Kotlarsky from Merkos L’inyonei Chinuch and members of the Australian Jewish Community.
