As we pulled up to the address on our list we were greeted by a man.

“Hello, Rabbis in Riverside geveld” the man said.

“Hi My name is Chaim and this is Mendy” I said.

“I am Shmuel, Shmuel Kahn” he said with a smile.

A day in Riverside

As we pulled up to the address on our list we were greeted by a man.

“Hello, Rabbis in Riverside geveld” the man said.

“Hi My name is Chaim and this is Mendy” I said.

“I am Shmuel, Shmuel Kahn” he said with a smile.

We continued to chat for quit some time, he said he was so happy to see Jews in the desert. He said he remembers back in 1969 when he moved from the big city, Los Angles in to Riverside to get away from the noise and traffic. He said there was a lot of anti-Semitism but it has calmed down some thanx to him and some of his friends. One made such a shturem about getting into the country club they finally let him in. Now thanx to that many Jews go there, in fact I was invited to play mahjong there Tuesday night. He told us about his service in the navy on the DE580. It was the smallest boat in the navy. He would locate and shoot German submarines. There were 10 religious sailors on the boat and they would pray three times a day with a Minyan but Shmuel wouldn’t join he said it wasn’t his thing. One day Shneider, one of the sailors was sick and and couldn’t make the Minyan and Shmuels bunkmate a Jewish boy named Silverberg asked him to join the Minyan and be the tenth man he agreed. “Thats my Mitzvah, and nobody can take that away. I may not be religious but that was my Minyan.” We continued talking for close to an hour, he had so much to share and never any Jews to tell. So, he was very pleased to find out that there was a Chabad center in town that he could go to.

Wow, so you roll the DICE and end up in Riverdale, not bad if you were aiming for Monsey over the Far East…..
