BELLINGHAM, WA [CHI] — Yosef Silverstien and Shalom Ceitlin knock on doors, and have their doors knocked on.

Sometimes the men have been given the name and address of the occupant by another contact. Other times, they said, they're there because they found the address while searching a phone book for “Jewish names.” While yet other times someone is in need, and gives them a call.

Traveling Rabbis Aim to Raise Jewish Awareness

BELLINGHAM, WA [CHI] — Yosef Silverstien and Shalom Ceitlin knock on doors, and have their doors knocked on.

Sometimes the men have been given the name and address of the occupant by another contact. Other times, they said, they’re there because they found the address while searching a phone book for “Jewish names.” While yet other times someone is in need, and gives them a call.

The men, 24 and 22, are part of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement’s Rabbinical Student Visitation Program, also known now as “The Roving Rabbis” Working in pairs, the traveling rabbis visit small communities around the world.

Silverstien from Brooklyn, and Ceitlin, from Montreal have been in the Bellingham area since July 15 and said they will be all over Whatcom County in many of the smaller cities until August 6th.

Their goal is not to convert people to Judaism. Rather, they said they are trying to strengthen Jewish awareness and revive the religion for fellow Jews, especially in communities without a Jewish infrastructure, such as Lynden, Blaine, and Ferndale etc.

Rabbis Silverstein and Ceitlin can be reached at 718-954-6718

The Chabad Jewish Center of Whatcom County has hosted and sponsored pairs of Young Rabbis for 4th straight summer. Before 4 years ago, such a program never existed in Whatcom county’s History.
