Supreme Court Justice’s [Shabbos] Candles Stolen

Justice Breyer

United States Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer‘s home was burglarized, and a pair of silver candlesticks was stolen. Since he is Jewish, we will go ahead and assume that the candlesticks were Shabbos candles.

From the Washington Post:

It’s been an unpleasant couple of months for Stephen Breyer. In February, the Supreme Court justice was robbed at his Caribbean vacation house by a man wielding a machete. And more recently, we’ve learned, he suffered a burglary at his Georgetown home.

A housekeeper discovered the break-in May 4. No one was home when it happened, Supreme Court spokeswoman Kathleen Arberg confirmed to our colleague Robert Barnes. According to a police report, the burglar appears to have entered by breaking a pane of glass near the front door; a pair of $500 silver candlesticks and a 100-piece set of silver valued at $2,500 were taken. Arberg confirmed that no material from the court was missing. Gwyndolyn Crump, a spokeswoman for the D.C. police, said the investigation remains open.

In the February robbery, the jurist and wife Joanna were vacationing on the island of Nevis when a stranger cut through their screen door and demanded money, according to a detailed account in the L.A. Times. The thief took about $1,000 in cash from the couple and two guests. No one was injured. According to published reports, a 28-year-old local gardener later turned himself into police but was released on bail.

How can a candlestick be a candle?
Why not assume that it was his fleishiger silver ware?

Why would you assume that these were shabbos candlesticks? Do you think his shiktza wife lights candles?! Or his daughter who is a galachte?! Breyer may be Jewish by birth, but he is completely fargoyisht, and wouldn’t know a shabbes leichter if he was struck with one. I’m sure he’s a regular visitor at his daughter’s church. So don’t make assumptions about leichter.

Milhouse: that all might be true, but still be nice!!

Shows how far we have gotten in the couuntry where no one is safe and it is ironic that the judicial system seems to favor the criminal more then the victum

From what you wrote it does not sound like you are a Lubavitch? I suggest you go into your local Chabad House, or Lubavitch Shul/Yeshivah and I am sure they will be very helpful in explaining to you the Chabad view on how to view a fellow Jew.

“… a pair of $500 silver candlesticks and a 100-piece set of silver valued at $2,500 were taken.”
It was his leichter AND his fleishig silverware.

#7, #5, who goes by the name “yes”, is probably not even a Jew. Certainly not a believing Jew.

I know he’s originally from Boston and is friendly with Rabbi Rachmiel Lieberman there. I’m surprised that you say his daughter is a non-Jewish Reverend?
