“Willamburg Taliban” Protest Iris Beauty Salon

WPIX

Occupy Wall Street isn’t the only protest attracting media attention in our area. A religious group in Williamsburg organized a protest of a hair salon on Lee Avenue.

PIX11 News obtained a controversial flyer in Yiddish, circulating around the predominately Orthodox community in Williamsburg. The flyer asks people to protest the Iris Salon, at 311 Lee Avenue, because it is “immodest” and is allegedly offensive to the surrounding religious community.

PIX11 News visited the salon. At the site of the salon, there is only a outside saying “Cleaners” and curtains covering all the windows. The owner of the salon refused to comment on this story.

The lastest protest of the group in front of the salon, was back in May when almost a hundred people gathered.

Pictures of the last protest are posted on a Facebook page created by supporters of the salon.

The page says, “the Willamburg Taliban” is attacking the salon ownership and, “a small group of extremists is seeking to terrorize and honest businesswoman.”

  • who goes who knows

loves how everything and everyone is an infringement in their lives, but the infringement on others is totally ok AND advertised LOL

She’s doomed. If her customer base will stop coming to her because they will not want to ruffle any feathers she will have to close down. The women there are not likely to buck the trend.

Maybe there was no protest because the men decided to occupy Wall Street instead. However, joking aside, don’t they get it? Beauty salons, not hair cutting places, equals women, not men or coed. I’ve lived all over the US, plus Germany and Korea, and beauty salons were always for women, barbers for men, and haircutters coed. When I lived in Korea the military post had a barber and salon–a door for each establishment–which was separated by a very wide wall. The army engineers proposed knocking down the wall and making it just one big establishment in order to put in more barbers. You never heard such a squawk from the women; they were not happy campers about having to have beauty treatments done in full view of the men. The project was thrown on the scrap heap.

  • GO IRIS!!!

The signs are still there, I saw them this week. And guess what? I was waiting for my ride today near my office when a Chassidishe yungerman approached. I moved aside!!! Aren’t I nice? LOL

PS I’m a CH Iris client. She makes women look & feel nice. What’s wrong with that? These guys are really weird if they have a problem with their wives making themselves pretty for their husbands. If the protesters are Bochrim they have much bigger problems than a little business.

  • This is news

Protest was in May..must be a slow day for news that they rehash stories from May and last month.

These extremist nutjobs are disgusting. They can do as they like inside their homes and inside their synagogues. They can live however they want, they have no right to force others to adobt their ways. They make me ashamed tob e a Jew. Jews were once known as the “People of the Book”. Once a time both secular and religious learning were valued. Now the only thing that is important is seeing which group can distort the Torah the most by twisitng it into the most arcane and ludicrous interpretations. If you want to live in a ghetto then go to Mea Shearim

Am I missing something, or is the reported misinformed and did not check for the correct date of the protest. The sign reads that the protest will take place on “Thursday.”

  • 2 SIDES TO EVERY STORY!

If the ppl from. Crown heights knew both sides of the story
Many ppl will understand the hurt she is is causing (probably unintentionaly)

    1) Williamsburg (orthodox Jews) are literalists in their belief of the Bible, so they fear that the contagious plague of immodesty (seen in crown heights) may spread to their community…

    2) The Bible warns of sever tragedies to a community who’s street view becomes unSanctified or unholy (immodest or what Jewish law considers provocative attire)

    3) since the unusually high rate of untimely deaths & recent tagedies in crown heights, these “literallists” in Williamsburg see her style of dress (in their community) as a potentially catastrophic influence, especially because her Charisma & kind-heart!

    4) When IRIS, (a popular & talanted beautician) dresses … in their street, this is viewed by the locals as highly inconsiderate for the reasons mentioned.

they are bored and don’t have anything else to do? it seems that they don’t know what to do with themselves. thats a silly cause to be involved with. They can do so many other meaningful things and they choose this?

  • #10 gotta respect chinfo

Ty to chinfo for not surpressing both sides of this story

Comment #10 is very balanced & eye opening

It doesn’t judge either side as evil

It helps each side see the innocence of the other

    Very nice
