Man Tries to Sell Stolen Streimel with Owner’s Name Written Inside

NY Daily News

A Brooklyn thief who needs his head examined swiped a $2,200 Jewish fur hat with the owner’s name written inside – and then tried to sell it, prosecutors say.

Robert Giuff, 38, made the mistake of trying to sell the “shtreimel” – a velvet hat surrounded by fur- for $350 at a Williamsburg hat store, prosecutors said.

The shopkeeper found the name and phone number of the hat’s owner, Miushe Horowitz, written inside the headpiece.

When Horowitz was reached, he said someone had broken into his car overnight, according to court documents. The accused topper-taker was arrested and charged with grand larceny.

“My client says he found it next to garbage on the street,” said defense lawyer Adrian Lesher.

Giuff, who has seven prior misdemeanors and is currently in a court-mandated drug program, was ordered held on $5,000 bail.

A shtreimel, mainly worn by married men, can cost more than $5,000 and is the most expensive piece of Hasidic clothing.

  • Shtreimel is cheaper in the long run

The Shtreimel is once for a lifetime or in the worst case scenario once a decade. Our hat lasts for one year. After that, it looks like a Shmata. So if you make the calculation, our hat for the long run is more expansive.

Good thing the phone number was in there too. Otherwise, to paraphrase R’ Yosef in the Gemara, “how many Moishe Horowitzes are there in the marketplace?”

  • Just wondering

Is there any connectionwith the recent discount shtreimel sales and the report of less rats in Brooklyn?

10, is there a reason NOT to be wearing real fur? What did Hashem make treife fur-bearing animals for, if not so we could wear their fur? Indeed, what were the first garments that Hashem Himself gave us when he threw us out of Gan Eden?

  • Fedoras can last long

Where does it say that everyone must wear an expensive streimel? Was it like that in the early days of Hassidism?

Fedoras can last for many years if taken care of.

Millhouse, you should watch some video of the hat makers tearing the fur off the animals while the animals ARE STILL ALIVE and think if you’d like that to happen to you or your kids or your parents before you post such stupid comments. Even if you need to wear fur, there’s NO WAY the Torah permits the cruelty done to the animals because the fur looks a bit better when harvested from living animals. and FYI I eat meat, and wear leather and don’t support PETA, but the way they get that fur is impossible to condone.
