Officials Eye Bump in Mumps in City Jewish Nabes
More than 900 New Yorkers – mostly Orthodox Jewish men – have been infected with mumps since an outbreak this summer, the city Health Department reported Tuesday.
That’s the most cases since 1979, when there were 157, and comes as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention counted 1,500 mumps cases in New York and New Jersey as of January.
“This is likely to continue,” said CDC spokesman Tom Skinner.
Roughly 40% of the city’s cases were among men ages 18-30 in Brooklyn’s Orthodox Jewish communities of Williamsburg, Borough Park and Crown Heights.
The mumps epidemic started last summer at a camp for Orthodox Jewish boys in Sullivan County after an 11-year-old boy was diagnosed with the disease. He had recently returned from England, where 4,000 people were hit with the mumps.
The city Health Department will give out free and low-cost mumps vaccines next week in those neighborhoods. The times and locations can be found at www.nyc.gov/health.

AS a commuinity service, since many of the case are in CH/BP/Monsey-please post the locations/time/days of free immunizations for the community.
Thank you
DON-T PANIC!
My daughter had the mumps. She was home from school for a little over a week. Naturally, she was in pain and needed tylenol – but she is B“H back to normal now. No one knows the long term side effects of the vaccines. Doctors are no’ge’ah b’davar and the drug industry is making millions off the vaccines. Do your research!!!
”When people start believing in Doctors, they stop believing in G-d.”
Some Sanity
Now that the paper that alleged the connection between vaccinations and autism has been retracted maybe we can start vaccinating our kids?
Nemo
Maybe this will teach all those crazy Crown Heights ladies about the importance of immunizing your children. Enough of this autism nonsense, mumps is a preventable disease.
Don-t rush to get MMR
I heard from a local Dr that this strain is different than the one the vaccination covers. They checked titers of those with mumps who received the vaccine series, and they were normal- which means this vaccine does not protect for this mumps outbreak.
Also, elderberry is a cure for it, as well as a way to prevent it. Search yourself.
Another case for tort reform
It would be instructive, also, to hear how many mumps cases have ended up having complications. I’m told it’s pretty much nil.
In virtually all cases, mumps is not dangerous. Even in the most commonly known — but VERY RARE — complication, where a testicle is affected, the case is virtually never affecting both testicles. Thus, the other one produces more than plenty of sperm for the rest of the man’s life.(And even when mumps affects a testicle, it does not always cause sterility in that testicle!)
This is roughly analogous to a woman who has had ONE ovary removed. The other ovary makes up for the one just fine; many, many “one-ovaried” women still end up becoming the mothers of multiple children, with no need for fertility help.
We need tort reform, so that the medical community can stop scaring folks, out of their own understandable fear of outrageously obscenely high law suit awards!
Mumps-alone vaccine doesn-t exist
I was told by my doctor that there’s no such thing as a “Mumps Vaccine” — in which the shot is ONLY for mumps.
It should be made clear that this is (probably) an “MMR” vaccine, for Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (German Measles). If that’s the case, ONE vaccine is not effective, but it needs a booster at a later date — late enough to still catch mumps in the interim.
What about this important fact?
Many of the folks who’ve caught mumps in this current wave WERE ALREADY vaccinated with the MMR series.
Give me a break
To all of you…put down the chumash and start caring about your kids. Guess what, you may have gotten lucky that your kids only had mild cases…but your kids can die from contracting measles mumps or rubella. Not to mention infect other children who may not have a strong of an immune system, in turn causing the death of someone else’s child! I don’t know about you, but I certainly don’t want to be responsible for hurting innocent children because I was too selfish and uneducated to get myself and my kids vaccinated.

Let it be known to all those who believe they know better than medical science that ‘The Lancet,’ the journal in which the original study linking autism to the MMR vaccine, has retracted the study. Having been discredited by every reputable scientific organization in the world, the journal announced two weeks ago that the findings linking autism to the MMR vaccine are false.
http://www.cnn.com/2010/HEA…
Please bear in mind that there is no scientific data backing the claim that there is a risk of autism. Not vaccinating your child not only puts your child at risk, but increases the risk that other children and families will catch these diseases from your child, as the MMR vaccine is only 95% effective. Help rid the world of diseases by immunizing your child.

Dear “Give Me A Break” —
Some people would say that an attitude like yours is “too selfish and uneducated”.
Do you really think the people who don’t vaccinate (or who delay vaccination until age 6, as I do with my offspring) are doing so for selfish and ignorant reasons?
You are not advancing your cause with your name-calling and insults!
Please try to understand that.
Thank you.
Rach
People, take it easy. Most of the people who got the mumps ARE VACCINED. As we see, it wasnt strong enough to prevent the force of mumps.
It doenst help to blame people who dont vaccine their kids, b.c even those that do are affected.
Just stay clean, keep washing your hands, avoid sharing germs (sharing snacks, drinks etc)and if you or your child has the mumps, KEEP THEM ISLOATED!!!
chanie
BS”D
AUTISM IS LITERALLY AT A PANDEMIC LEVEL.
I JUST SPOKE TO SOMEONE THE OTHER WEEK, AND SHE KNOWS HER CHILD HAS AUTISM BC OF THE VACCINE, AND THERE IS NOTHING SHE CAN DO ABOUT IT. DOCTORS, PHARMACEUTICALS ARE PROTECTED OR TOO HARD TO FIGHT.
OPEN YOUR EYES AND EARS, THERE IS SO MUCH FRAUD GOING ON, ITS NUTS.
DONT BOTHER CALLING ME IRRESPONSIBLE, I FEEL MORE RESPONSIBLE THAN MOST AS I HAVE BEEN TAKING MEASURES TO KEEPING MY CHILDREN’S IMMUNE SYSTEMS STRONG AND HEALTHY. THAT MEANS #1 I NURSED THEM TILL AT LEAST 6 MONTHS. THERE ARE WAYS TO DO IT WHETHER YOU ARE WORKING OR NOT – AND THEN GUESS WHAT, HASHEM DOES HELP WHEN YOU WANT TO DO WHAT IS BEST FOR YOUR CHILDREN.
Got it Anyway
My son had the vaccine and got the mumps anyway. The vaccine obviously is not a 100% solution to preventing the mumps.
Many factors involved in Vaccine choices
Dear NEMO:
People who don’t vaccinate, or who postpone it until the child is older, are not merely fixated on autism as a risk.
There are other reasons people make these choices.
I suggest you read up on it.
Brochas for gesund for you!
For your info
What about vaccinating a 2-day-old just because the hospital/doctor can bill for it. How do they expect the infant to contract hepatitis B? By the way, the risk with that vaccine is vasculitis- do any ‘educated’ parents want that for their kids? What about the varicella vaccine- let them get chicken pox, become immune, and not worry that immunity will wain and they can get it as adults- which is an issue then.
Don’t judge anyone as long as you are ‘brainwashed’ by our drug-based society. America is not the most advanced when it comes to real cures- here we are treating symptoms and cutting out parts that can’t be treated. Please research your options for your body- nobody else cares for it.
Give me a break
Let,
Thank you for at least vaccinating, and yes with the risk of killing someone else’s child, which I believe goes against at least one commandment and a multitude of other mitzvos, it is selfish not to vaccinate.
Chanie, Did you know that the vaccine is given between 12 and 18 months, which is around the same time you would see signs of autism in a child. However, a doctor cannot diagnose autism until the child is 3. so unless your friend waited until her child was 3 your claims are invalid. Also just a little tid bit of information there is no way of proving one has anything to do with the other, which is why we still dont have an answer…so unless your friend is magic she or he cannot prove that their child got autism from the vaccine!
Nemo
Give me a break – correction: it can be and has been proven that MMR vaccine has no connection with autism.
to DON-T PANIC
You are right when you say that the doctors are Nogeah Bdavar. Who would you prefer to take advice from? Your plumber? Your baby sitter? Doctors are nogeah bdavar BECAUSE THEIR JOB IS TO PROTECT YOU AND YOUR FAMILY!!!!
Next time you need a mezuzah will you go to a sofer, or is that not smart – because the sofer is nogeah bdavar?
have a stuffed toilet? call ANYONE except for a plumber, because they are nogeah bdavar….
Next point is that when you have someone you love who is chas vsholom terribly ill, you trust your doctors, but for this you don’t .
I rarely put negative comments up, but this is completely ridiculous!!!
The ONLY study that EVER showed a link to autism was disputed and published in the same journal YEARS ago. Now, not only was it disputed, but the journal RETRACTED it, and the doctor (who was working for lawyers in an autism case) is being brought up on charges for FALSIFYING RECORDS!!!!!
to -to don-t panic-
“Doctors are Nogeah Bdavar…”- they are taught what the industry wants them to think. They don’t know what is really best for your body as a whole. I am against many things taught to me in medical school, and on my own researched many things that DOCTORS ARE IGNORANT about, including cures for diseases and conditions, to which they will treat some symptoms, which will give more ‘side effects’=damage your body more.

It is generally not so simple to point the finger at the INDIVIDUAL from whom someone caught the germs for mumps, measles, and several other illnesses.
Even when someone else in the house has a sickness first, the incubation period for a illness is long enough BEFORE SYMPTOMS, that later cases in the same family can easily have come from others than that other person in the house.
You told someone else, above, that someone would have to be ”magic“ to know why/how their child has autism. Well, perhaps that applies to a few other conditions/illnesses, too.
So please stop the histrionics and dramatic accusations of ”killing someone else’s child“ (unless you’re a Rov or Dayan). Save that accusation for all the people who poison our kids with so much candy and soda at school, shul, etc. Or save that accusation for the schools that so often deprive our kids of fresh air and exercise.
Remember: there’s no such thing as a vaccine for impetigo, tuberculosis, scarlet fever, many forms of meningitis, intestinal worms, and numerous other things that ”go around” in this country and other western societies.
PS — As for this mumps situation, AGAIN REMEMBER — many who have caught it, had been vaccinated for it!!!
Yes, I do vaccinate (with a number of precautions, including ONE series at a time, and no shots until several years after infancy — this is NOT advice meant for others, but due to our own family medical history that includes — for some — a rare autoimmune disease).
But even vaccination is not a guarantee. Hashem is in charge — we make a keili for brachahs by living as healthfully as possible, but ultimately after that, it’s not COMPLETELY up to us.
