WASHINGTON — Former US President Jimmy Carter on Monday asked for the Jewish community’s forgiveness for any negative stigma he may have caused Israel over the years.

Carter, who is not a popular character in Israel, enraged the American Jewish community’s in the past with various statements made in his book “Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid.”

In the book, Carter blamed Israel for impeding the Middle East peace process via settlement construction, further claiming such a policy will lead to apartheid.

The former president also accused Israel of interfering with US efforts to broker peace in the region.

“We must recognize Israel’s achievements under difficult circumstances, even as we strive in a positive way to help Israel continue to improve its relations with its Arab populations, but we must not permit criticisms for improvement to stigmatize Israel.

”As I would have noted at Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, but which is appropriate at any time of the year, I offer an Al Het for any words or deeds of mine that may have done so,“ he said.

”Al Het” refers to the Yom Kippur prayer asking God forgiveness for sins committed.

Head of the Anti-Defamation League Abraham Foxman welcomed Carter’s apology, saying it marked the beginning of reconciliation.

  • Yes, but . . . .

Has he changed his attitudes and opinions about what’s needed in Eretz Yisroel?

If not, Carter’s just pandering, and gathering more free publicity to himself, a has-been, who’s done so much damage with his horrific books and speeches, etc.

    QUESTION:

    WHY did he say this
    WHY now
WHAT does he intend to gain.

I would NEVER trust him. The disgusting immoral damage is way too disgusting to be forgiven.
    He is an animal.
If he would give money to people to get all those books back,
    MAYBE I’d think of it.
But then come to think of it,
    its not worth it.
    I really don’t trust him.
    Way too much sell-out.
    To say the least.

Carter DOES NOT equal Obama. Worlds and worlds apart.

Carter’s actions as president have done inestimable damage to Israel and klal Yisroel.

So far, Obama has not done anything substantial, good or bad, in the middle east. He’s pushing talks, but like most skilled politicians, he realizes that the appearance of doing something, i.e. negotiation, is all he is after. He seems smart enough to know that nothing will change.

Carter, on the other hand, actively pushed and succeeded in great harm to Israel. The only other politician whose actions were some harmful was Ariel Sharon.

    B“H

Excuse me, Reuven, but it was OBAMA’S bright idea to push HARD for the so-called ”Settlement Freeze” better known as the ghettoization of many, many Israeli Jews in the outer areas of Eretz Israel.

Obama asked for what Bush asked for – settlements halt to get negotiations started. No different. And it will not make any difference at all, at this point. The residents of Judea and Samaria are no more isolated today than they were a year ago.

Carter on the other hand pushed for an outright giveaway of land.

And we can only assume that Bush pushed for, behind the scenes, and got, Sharon to give away Gaza. Shameful.

  • Mordechai

Chanina will have Carter over to his house and have pictures taken. Anash will line up for their photos of Chanina and Carter, and everybody will be happy.

  • Total Crock

We will know that he means it when he explains how he came to be so pro-Palistinian (money, etc.) and when he writes and publishes a book taking back all he said in his first book. Other than that this is just a political move.
