And Washington, D.C. based representatives of the Libyan government informed Congressman Steve Rothman (D-NJ) that Gadhafi, will not be staying in Englewood, N.J. if he comes to the United States for the meeting of the United Nations General Assembly next month.
“I am very pleased that Moammar Gadhafi will not be coming to Englewood,“ said Rothman. ”His appearance would have presented unnecessary safety and security issues for the residents of Englewood and the Libyan diplomats.“
The State Department wouldn’t officially confirm the developments.
The news come on the same day a northern New Jersey mayor went to court to stop renovation work at the mansion where Gadhafi wanted to stay next month when he addresses the United Nations General Assembly.
Englewood Mayor Michael Wildes said if the federal government wouldn’t do the right thing and keep Gadhafi out of a community where he’s not welcome, he would. Libyan intelligence is widely believed to have orchestrated the 1988 attack on Pan American flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, which killed all 259 aboard — including 38 people from New Jersey.
Gadhafi gave a hero’s welcome to the only man arrested in that attack when the bomber was released last week from a Scottish prison.
Wildes said mansion workers have violated numerous city ordinances. Gadhafi’s visit to the Garden State has rankled many Jersey politicians.
Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) wrote to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton this week, requesting that Gadhafi remain in a six block area around the U.N.
”Given recent events, I believe the State Department should ensure that Colonel Kadhafi’s entry into the United States is for official UN business only and does not allow him to travel freely,“ Lautenberg said.
In the hopes of stemming an international incident over the tent-pitching, Clinton was looking to arrange a hotel room or some other accommodations for the dictator, the Daily News reported on Wednesday. The topic dominated the daily State Department news briefing on Wednesday.
”Of course our priority has been and will remain the families of the victims of this tragedy,“ State Department spokesman Ian Kelly said.
”We’re also talking to the Libyans to highlight the concerns that we have and the very raw sensibilities or sensitivities of the families who live in that area,” Kelly said.
After the news broke that Gadhafi would most likely not be allowed to camp out in Jersey, Sen. Lautenberg released a statement saying:
“I commend the White House and Secretary Clinton for working diligently to stop Moammar Gadhafi from stepping foot in our state. It appears that we have prevailed in our fight to stop this dangerous figure from visiting New Jersey next month. Col. Gadhafi’s visit would have added insult to injury for the families who recently suffered through the release of the convicted Pan Am Flight 103 bomber. Colonel Gadhafi still has blood on his hands and I pledge to remain vigilant to ensure that he never enters New Jersey.”

You’re really shameless for useing that picture when you could have easily used a picture of Bush shaking Qaddafi’s hand as it was under his administration that, “all was forgiven”, not to mention Bush Sr. who set that all in motion. Under Bush Jr. diplomatic ties were restored, it was Condi Rice who first shook his hand then. You might also have used a picture of McCain shaking his hand when he met with Qaddafi during his run for the white house.
Moreover this is an old picture(from the G8, Qaddafi heads the African Union) and ignores the White House’s condemnation of the release of the Lockerbie bomber, as well as the reception in Lybia. The President has no plans to meet with Qaddafi who was invited by the UN, let alone shake his hand.

Bush never shook his hand. Of course Rice did, that’s her job. Are you saying the sanctions shouldn’t have been lifted, and he should have been left to continue developing his nuclear program? He has given up terrorism, he’s given up his nuclear program that was MUCH further along than the CIA suspected, and all the day after Saddam Hussein was captured by BUSH’s orders. That was a major achievement of the Bush administration. But Bush never shook his hand, and never would.
Obama is Gadaffi’s friend; his mentor Wright flew to Libya while Gadaffi was still openly sponsoring international terror. He shook hands with Gadaffi because he has no problem with him at all. Now that he’s come under political pressure he’s being more careful with how he behaves in public, but you know very well what’s in his heart.

I’m saying Bush kissed and made up, some in Washington say sucked up to Qaddafi because he’s as loyal as a snake and the US waned something from him, a friend in that part of the world for one. Do you think this will stop him from anything he wants to do in the future, like further sponsoring terrorism, or developing plutonium for others.

Give the new guy a chance to undo the damage, at least the eight years it took to do it.
