JERUSALEM — Senior Sephardic rabbis issued a religious ruling calling on observant Jews to limit spending on mishloach manot, traditional gift baskets given to friends and family during the Purim holiday next week. Rabbi Ovadia Yosef and the Council of Torah Sages called on their followers to “refrain from wastefulness on sweets and precious items.” The rabbis have urged their followers to be frugal in light of the economic downturn.
Yesterday they suggested filling the gift baskets with foods with a longer shelf life and a higher nutritional value than candy.

Right on!!
Give a smaller mishloach manos and give the extra money (burning the hole in your pocket) for matonos la’evyonim.
I’m sure that the people who distribute that money will be busier than usual this year!!

Why would economy have anything to do with how we do mitzvos? I suggest do more mitzvois then before. That might be good for economy

Ha! Longer shelf life then candies? That will be something very hard to find. There is no expiration date on them!!
High Nutrition?? Candies have a lot of calories. The only thing that would beat candies with calories would be mashke! Guys give mashke and candies for shalachmonois!
