Agriprocessors Files for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection

POSTVILLE, IA [AP] — A kosher slaughterhouse in Iowa has filed for bankruptcy protection, blaming a May immigration raid for financial difficulties.

Agriprocessors’ move to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Tuesday comes a day before the meatpacker was to meet in court with its biggest lender, First Bank of St. Louis.

The bank is seeking to foreclose on the plant in Postville and appoint a third party to oversee Agriprocessors’ assets.

The bankruptcy filing says Agriprocessors owes $50 million to $100 million to creditors.

The plant was the site of a May 12 immigration raid in which 389 people were arrested.

A lawyer for the company did not immediately return a call Wednesday seeking comment.

There are 2 sites in support of the Rubashkin family and Agri during these trying times:

http://www.helprubashkins.com/ – interactive and focuses on the Rubashkins and their chessed (full disclosure – it is my site)

http://agrifacts.info/ – information based and focuses on Agri and Postville.

Please support the Rubashkins as they have supported so many individuals over the years on these sites as well as here.

And may this turn out to be didan notzach veyad chassidim al ha’elyoino!

    STOP BEFORE POSTING!

The Rubashkin family has endured much tzoros over the last few months. Please be considerate before posting any criticism. They need your chizzuk now. They need your tefillos. Please be mentchlich. (Unfortunately many hundreds of families are unemployed as a result and kosher meat prices will see inflation like never before).

Any news or ideas who might be interested in assuming responsibility for the plant now? While Agri. seems to be no longer a functional concern the plant and surrounding community can still be a good investment opportunity for an enterprising firm (in my own horribly uninformed opinion, of course).

  • Idea?

To the founder of helprubashkins.com: is there a way for us to participate in the forums (i.e. comment) without having to register?
I would like to write anonymously and also without having to be part of yet another blog.

    To Idea?:

I will see if I can allow limited participation with moderation on the forums etc (responding to posts but not posting new topics). However, you can make up any username – I only check the e-mail address once when I approve the account and I do not do anything with it afterward.

Please understand that I am doing this as a non commercial service and I need to block the troublemakers before they can even write a word; otherwise the ”peanut gallery” and the spambots could overwhelm me and my servers with spam and nonsense which I would have to continually delete.

Check the site tomorrow morning and by then I will have posted a message if I am indeed able to allow some sort of participation without signing up.

    Thanks for your support!

The worst part of this is that Rubashkin supplied kosher food products to those outposts of the jewish world that were off the main tract; it was their efforts that made it possible for those their to continue living, working and spreading Yiddishkeit. Now, it looks like a seizable community will be deprived of kosher food.
