As Pesach approaches, the overall travel situation to and from Israel remains fluid and, in many cases, disrupted. Some travelers have chosen to leave early. Others are experiencing significant difficulty securing flights or finalizing plans.
Nevertheless, for those who are able to travel – whether departing Israel or arriving for Yom Tov – it is essential to be aware of several important requirements and precautions. Even in a complicated travel environment, proper preparation can prevent additional stress and serious complications.
Chaim V’Chessed therefore urges all travelers to carefully review the following guidance:
Traveler’s Insurance – Absolutely Essential
Proper traveler’s insurance is not optional – it is critical.
This applies equally to:
- Israeli residents traveling abroad
- Visitors coming to Israel for Pesach
Each year, Chaim V’Chessed assists travelers who either did not obtain insurance or misunderstood their coverage, only to find themselves facing medical emergencies without adequate protection. Even relatively minor incidents can become financially overwhelming without proper medical and emergency coverage.
Travelers should confirm that their policy provides comprehensive coverage for the full duration of their trip. If there is any uncertainty, consult a qualified insurance professional before departure.
ETA-IL Requirement – Do Not Overlook This
Since 2025, Israel has required most travelers entering the country to obtain an approved ETA-IL – an electronic travel authorization – prior to arrival.
Holders of a valid Israeli passport are exempt. Certain other categories – such as some student visa holders and permanent residents – are officially exempt as well.
However, airline personnel worldwide are often unfamiliar with these exemptions. In practice, travelers who are technically exempt have encountered delays or boarding denials because they did not have an approved ETA on file.
To avoid unnecessary complications at airport check-in, Chaim V’Chessed strongly advises that any traveler who does not hold a valid Israeli passport apply for an ETA-IL in advance, even if they believe they qualify for an exemption.
It is also important to note that Israeli citizens who do not currently possess a valid Israeli passport are advised to obtain an ETA.
Travelers should beware of fraudulent websites impersonating the official ETA portal and charging excessive fees for what is a simple, low-cost process. These third-party sites often appear legitimate but should be avoided. The official ETA application costs just 25 NIS and is valid for two years.
