Health Ministry Public Health Services Director Professor Sigal Sadetski on Tuesday spoke to the Knesset’s Coronavirus Committee about how Israel is handling the outbreak.

“I’m sorry to say, but the virus is back,” she said. “We see a clear correlation between reopening the economy and the rise in infections. We are in the midst of a significant rise in the number of cases around Israel, especially among children.”

“Thirty children in a classroom does not really fit with the coronavirus guidelines. There has been a rise in infections in 57 different localities, and that’s not a statistic that we can ignore.

“The rise in the number of asymptomatic people tested should not explain this rise, since the percentage of people testing positive continues to rise. The rise in the number of [total] tests should have brought the percentage of positives down.”

On Tuesday, the Ministry of Education reported that as of Tuesday morning there were 615 teachers and students infected with coronavirus. An additional 22,059 education workers and students are in isolation, and 171 educational institutions have closed as a result of contagion in their area.
