Federal Judge in Florida Vacates CDC’s Transportation Mask Mandate

Florida Federal Judge Katheryn Kimball Mizele struck down the CDC’s mask mandate for transportation hubs, including airports, planes, and buses, saying that they overstepped their authority in the most recent extension.

According to Mizelle, the CDC had not properly explained its decision to extend the mandate for another 15 days after it was originally set to expire Monday.

“Because ‘our system does not permit agencies to act unlawfully even in the pursuit of desirable ends,’ the court declares unlawful and vacates the mask mandate,” the judge wrote.

What exactly that means for travelers remains unclear, such as if masks will continued to be required as the CDC reviews the mandate.
