Chabad House of Mineola Devastated by Flooding

Mineola, Long Island — Yesterday, Wednesday the third of Menachem Av, Cong. Beth Sholom Chabad of Mineola was hit by flash floods which caused significant damage to the Shul and Chabad House.

At around 8am a torrential rainstorm caused the entire lower level to quickly fill with over 5 feet of water.

“Our community is devastated, distraught and in total shock” Rabbi Anchelle Perl told CrownHeights.info, “it’s hard to imagine our losses. A Safer Torah was submerged; thousands of Seforim, our ballroom, offices and boiler room have all been lost.

The Shul has only limited insurance, barely enough to cover the clean up.

“With Hashems Help, we are determined to rebuild” said Rabbi Perl. “I plead with all my friends and community to please help us at this time. Early estimates indicate we face the daunting task of raising $500,000.”

That’s terrible. Why only “minimal insurance”? Insurance is important…you only need it when you need it, but when you do…

I recommend everyone, home & business, get insurance against theft, fire, & acts of G-d.

    Maybe FEMA etc can help.

    Hatzlocha.

  • ny shliach

My Chabad House also suffered some minor damage. I’m sure around the NY area this happened to other Batei Chabad. It would be nice to see Mrkos organize a ‘Katrina’ stly response. Complete with Yeshiva bochurim helping to clean up, maybe a college or two. I would even allow for it to be taped and aired at the Kinnus. I’m sure Rabbi Prel wouldn’t mind. this goes without saiyng that a massive fundraising campaig, ala ‘Katrina’ would be great!

Rabbi Perl is truly one of the best schluchim! Please, everybody, help him rebuild. His mosdos is magnificent, let’s bring it back whole.

  • Pity

We should all help out dear sheluchim in need! But don’t you think you should take out flood or water damage insurance?

  • A chossid

Rabbi Perl is a shliach for many years and has touched the lives of 1000s of people he is ready to help anyone in the time of need & is fully devoted to his job, it is now our turn to help him in the time of need.

  • I Love Polotics

    hey all big insurance fans

how much coverage do you have on your property, is it enough to replace everything, and what about things with senemental value, what type of coverage do you have on that…

or do you have full coverage, yeh like one of those who will be happy to get a flood, “great a flood, lets have pesach in the bahamas”, or hey great now we can buy an extra house.

bottom line dont be to judgemental
i know thats hard to accept but… what can you do
    1 jew 3 opinions…

    by the way i have 4… :-)

whats the 4th you ask hummmm… i agree with ny shliach
being that Merkos collected big time for there unused (now burned out) kolel on union street
im sure they have some insurance money to help out.

  • shliach ny fan

    totally agree with ny shliach.

merkoz is so quick to help ppl around the world in need, non jews and jews, for whatever reasons they had and i hope they will be AS quick to help out these shluchim, especially rabbi perl

after all, isnt merkoz the back bone of our shluchim

or maybe R Cunin from CA can help out, will def help him with his publicity for the telethon…

isnt that what ppl do these days, help ppl out to publicize themselves, if both parties can gain, y not, right?

cmun ppl!! help out with a heart, these shluchim need you,

    HELP THEM HELP OTHERS!!

  • my sympathy

interesting to note, by looking at the devastating pictures above one can’t help but notice how the Rebbe’s picture seems totally unscathed in any way.
Certianly if Rabbi Perl will ask the Rebbe for a Bracha he will be successful in coming up with even more money than he actually needs to be able to renew, even better than before.
hashem should give him strength to get through this without too much hassle.

  • Shliach Ben Shliach

It’s just another fund raising gimmick. Similar to his paper clip campaign.

its a very wealthy comunity and there is no reason they can’t Clean up and rebuild on their own.

  • Camp Gan Israel of Suffolk County

Our counselors were at Rabbi Perl’s shul just last Shabbos, and had a great time, and saw first hand the wonderful work that Rabbi Perl is doing. They are all shocked by what happened and offered to help with the cleanup.

  • stilnot an insurance agent, but clued in

    To I love Polotics (Spellcheck?)

Yes, I actually DO have full insurance that replaces everything at current market prices. I have full insurance on my car. I take out travel insurance. We have life insurance.

We’ve used all of them (except B“H life). I had a fire (B”H very small)from of all things, Chanukah Licht, a MAJOR flood from my upstairs neighbor, furniture AND FIXTURES were destroyed from thousands of gallons of water & we’ve had cars totalled & stolen. We once had to cancel a trip.

We haven’t died, so we didn’t collect on that.

    ;) LOL etc.

Insurance is worth the $$. I wouldn’t have been able to replace things if there wasn’t decent insurance. BTW, take pictures of valuables like silver, jewelry, art etc. And get professional valuations regularly.

Hope no one ever needs it, esp. life insurance.

  • a real shliach be shliach

    hey shliach ben shliach

    live up to your name

you have NO idea what you are talking about,

shlichus and money have nothiung to do with each other,

a poor or wealthy comunity has no reflection on you bank account. incredible how you are so quick to judge.

  • not Orthodox, not male

Rabbi Perl has been very kind to me, to my parents, and to my closest friends. He is a person who has his priorities straight. He puts people before material possessions and despite his orthodoxy, is respectful of everyone, religious or not. I intend to help him to rebuild his shul and I suggest that all other readers do the same.

  • anon

I’m heartbroken to hear of this. Rabbi Perl seems to me to be a remarkably good man. His genuine warmth, kindness, and generosity to me and my friends has touched us all very deeply. He constantly talks about us all being connected and refuses to be judgemental. I will help and I urge everyone who reads this to help.

And shame on “Shliach Ben Shliach.

  • Mendel

I am glad that the pictures of The Rebbe (MH`M) were not damaged, the sforim can be replaced, but the pictures….I think that this moifes is worthy of publication in Kfar.

  • Fully Insured

    To: stilnot an insurance agent

couldn’t agree more. I am fully covered as well. Unfortunatly this is not the case for most shluchim. Instead of sending R’Pearl a check, a fund should be set up to help shluchim with life insurance policies and then property insuirance. You can’t imagine how many shluchim are exposed and as they get older……

Think of shluchim who nebech died in the last 10 years R’L. There was always a massive fundraising campaign that still left their family’s pennyless after a couple of years (with the exception of one that I was able to think of who’s family won a major law suit). The modern Orthodox day schools have been successful with doing this for their rabeim, why can’t we do this for our rabeim and shluhim?

One last note – I doubt Sifrei Torah and other religous items can be insured….

From every thing that seems to be bad, theres something good that comes out of it. I hope that you are blessed with many brachos.
