Officer Russel Timoshenko, the young police officer shot Monday during a traffic stop in Brooklyn, has died.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said Saturday evening that Timoshenko passed at the Kings County Hospital surrounded by family and members of the 71st Precinct.

“He made the ultimate sacrifice with unflinching sacrifice to do it; we are more committed than ever to the prosecution of the individuals responsible for his death,” said Kelly.

Kelly said Timoshenko passed away on his own; he had been paralyzed, suffered brain swelling, and was unable to breathe on his own since the shooting.

Upon hearing the news of Timoshenko’s death, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who has been out of town all week, will return to the city.

“While I can’t know the anguish they are going through, I want Russel’s parents, Leonid and Tatyana, to know their son was a hero,” said Bloomberg in a statement. “It does not provide any consolation, but I am proud of the investigators who worked so swiftly to apprehend those that committed this detestable and cowardly act. Despite the best efforts of the team of medical professionals at Kings County Medical Center, Russel has now left this world and is in the hands of God. May he rest in peace.”

Timoshenko, 23, and his partner Herman Yan pulled over a BMW SUV early Monday morning under the suspicion that it was stolen. Prosecutors say Dexter Bostic, 34, shot Timoshenko in the face while Robert Ellis, 34, shot Yan in the chest and the arm.

Yan, who was saved by his police vest, was released earlier this week from the hospital.

Prosecutors believe a third suspect, 29-year-old Lee Woods, was driving the SUV at the time of the shooting.

Three guns were found at the scene. Police say the one allegedly used by Bostic had also been used in a recent drive-by shooting in Queens.

Ellis and Bostic were arraigned on several charges including attempted murder, assault on a police officer, and weapons possession Friday. Neither suspect entered a plea; however, Ellis’ attorney claimed that his client did not fire any shots. His attorney also said that Ellis was the driver and Bostic was in the passenger seat.

Both were extradited Thursday from Pennsylvania, where they had been captured after a four-day manhunt that stretched from Brooklyn to the Poconos.

Woods was charged Wednesday.

Kelly said the prosecution is already filing paperwork to increase the charges in response to Timoshenko’s death.

All three suspects were ordered to be held without bail.

FIRST I MUST SAY THAT MY HEART GOES OUT TO THE FAMILY AND ALL NEW YORK POLICE OFFICERS! IF THIS IS NOT A WAKE UP CALL,THEN THERE IS NO OTHER CALLS!!
THE POLICE MUST BE TOUGH ALL OF THE SAME PEOPLE THAT KILLED THIS POOR COP!
I HAVE SEEN OVER THE YEARS WHEN A COP PULLS OVER A WHITE PERSON,OR IF A COP WAS GOING TO GIVE A TICKET TO A COLORED PERSON,I SEE TIME AND TIME AGAIN THERE IS FEAR IN THE EYES OF THE OFFICER AND MANY TIMES THE OFFICE JUST LETS THE COLORED PERSON GO WITH OUT A TICKET.THIS IS DONE OUT OF FEAR! THE BLACK COMMUNITY KNOWS IT,AND TAKES ADVANTAGE OF IT!!
IT IS TIME FOR OUR DEAR POLICE OFFICERS TO TAKE FULL CONTROL,AND NOT FEAR ANYONE ANYMORE!!! MAY GOD BLESS YOU ALL, AND WATCH OVER ALL OF YOU.

  • Crownh Heightser

to life time member of crown height:

I don’t think that what you are saying is correct. I’ve seen many people being pulled over by cops, weather they are colored or not, and getting tickets. I also don’t see how this is a wake up call, the cops where DOING their jobs, THAT’S how they got shot. So if anything we should just be thanking them and not criticizing them.

  • Israel

There is a death penalty law on the books in N.Y.S. but it has never been used. If there was ever a time to use this law it is now. Let these sub humans know that the death penalty awaits them and that it will be used they will not get off with a life sentence of watching color TV and eating stake etc.

  • curious

What about Mr. Klein A”H that was killed by gun, did the police even bother looking for the guy who did it.

  • Crown Heightser

    To life time crown heights’er:

You said that this a wake up call that cops aren’t doing their jobs, which is wrong to say!

  • Boruch ben Tzvi haKohaine Hoffinger

    B”H
    Very sad.
What is sadder, though, is that the police department will probably use all their power to make sure the perps get the maximum sentence while they don’t exercise the same force with every citizen, which is what they were sworn to do.
Aren’t they here to protect us using our money?
Soon it’s the 16th anniversary of the Crown Heights’ Riots.
We saw the city and state stand idly by after it began with a murder and continued for 3 more days! Perhaps there would be another murder?
The riots could have been stopped in 1 hour with proper law enforcement. The crowds were composed of a lot of stupid, wild teenagers.

  • Thank you Russel

There are so many ungrateful drecks out there. I wouldn’t sacrifice my life for some of the thankless ungrateful people that exist in our neighborhood. Russel was not even from our community and his life was taken for protecting us. Russel was a man of great virtue.

  • Sorry but cynical

    Definitely a tragedy.

But what about Efraim Klein HY“D, & the farce that followed the murder of Yankel Rosenbaum HY”D?

Oh yes. They’re just Jews. Now it makes sense.

  • please make the cops job easy

Some of you ppl should walk in a cops shoes. Some of the community leaders walk all over the nypd and disrepect them. Ppl need to show effort to make there job easyier. If you don’t want tickets for doing something wrong. Take the time a get there without speeding. Don’t park by fire hydrain, or expired meters.

  • A time and place for everything

what a Chillul Hashem. A young officer, 23 years old gets murdered while doing his job and people take this post as an opportunity to criticize the Police. Some of you posters make me want to vomit.

Why in such an awesome neighborhood with such action are homes only $1,000,000.00? I call for an immediate increase in home prices to $2,000,000.00 and condos of 1300 sf now selling for $510,000.00 should double to One Million Twenty Thousand. Why not? WHere else in this wonderful US do you have a burglary, two cops shot, of which one dies, two teenagers beaten nearly to death within one week and all within the HEART!?

  • No fan of Bloomberg

I am deeply sorry for this tragedy. Mayor Michael Bloomberg is totally responsible for this spilled blood, and all of the spilled blood in our community!!!If he would support his police force and let them be tough… things would be accomplished,
How many of us remember Guiliano’s police! They were fierce and had a fierce leader behind them who wasn’t scared to get his feet dirty!
Hey Bloomberg… Get out of your Billion dollar Limo and spend a week in our neighborhood>>Who cares about your money… Where are your GUTS!!!!

  • sick of the woosies
