Completion of the Rambam in Memory of Daniel Agami OBM
Spiritual Homage to a Fallen Hero
Maimonides’ (The “Rambam” — Rabbi Moses ben Maimon) magnum opus, is called “The Mishneh Torah” a work spanning hundreds of chapters and describing all of the laws mentioned in the Torah.
This Wednesday evening, July 11, at 8:30 PM at Chabad-Lubavitch of Greater Boynton, this entire 14 volume, monumental achievement, will be completed in its entirety; a Siyum – the finishing of the study cycle of an entire year, in memory of 26 year old Daniel Agami, of blessed memory.
A “Siyum” of such magnitude is considered amongst the highest honors which can traditionally be bestowed upon a Jewish soul. Daniel is the fallen, heroic soldier, a member of Chabad of Greater Boynton, whose entire platoon was killed by a roadside bomb some ten days ago.
“While the US Army and the President’s administration were magnificent in their care and tribute to one of their finest, we as a Jewish community wanted to do something more spiritual, and of great value in Jewish tradition in saluting this very special Jewish soul,” stated Rabbi Sholom Ciment, Director of Chabad of Greater Boynton.
“Daniel took leave from Baghdad this past Passover to join his family and addressed our congregation leaving an overwhelming, deep impression on our community members. It was in that address where he stated that it was his mission and duty to fight the evil powers of this world, and to bring freedom to every soul that he could. He then announced his voluntary re-enlistment back to the streets of Baghdad.”
The Rambam – Maimonides, is the chief codifier of Jewish law. In addition, he was considered one of the most elite of physicians and philosophers of his time. “Guide to The Perplexed,” is another of The Rambam’s more famous works.
The Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, instituted 25 years ago, a study cycle in which tens of thousands of Jews, in growing fashion, study three chapters, daily of this 14 volume, all encompassing, scholarly – yet clearly written work, thus finishing it in one years time.
“This is a truly massive accomplishment. It marks a milestone of a quarter century since the Rebbe endowed our generation, through sparking the acquisition of rich and priceless knowledge, by countless thousands of the entire Torah, as captured by this luminary of all times, The Rambam, who lived some 900 years ago.
This year’s completion, in this auspicious year, is being accomplished here in this region, for a legendary figure of heroism, values, impeccable principles and true Jewish pride. Daniel studied, throughout his youth, in the Lubavitch school system. Therefore it is only proper that this spiritual homage to this stalwart pillar of Jewish pride be paid by the Chabad center,” said the Rabbi.
The father of Daniel, Itzik Agami, will address the assembled. Men and women are invited, free of charge, to join in the traditional Seudas Mitzvah – a meal associated with this commandment of inculcating Torah knowledge and marking this significant milestone. Video selections of the Rebbe, as he speaks of The Rambam and his lifetime’s achievements will be shown. Rabbi Yosef Raichik, Director of Chabad’s Greater Boynton Torah Institute will lead the completion ceremony.
