Everyone had better buckle up or risk getting a fine in New York State.

A new law came into effect on November 1st that requires all riders of motor vehicles to wear a seatbelt, regardless of age or location in the vehicle.

The new law, called the universal seat belt law, institutes a penalty for anyone unbuckled in a motor vehicle, regardless of the location or age of the person.

In the past, adult passengers were required to wear seatbelts, but only if they were sitting in the front seat. Children under the age of 16 were always required.

The penalty for an adult seat belt violation is $50, but starts at $100 and three points on your driver’s license if a child under the age of 16 is not properly buckled

The move for the new law took years to accpomplish, with the first version of the law introduced in 2009. The law finally passed ten years later in 2019.
