Hurricane Laura, now a category 4 hurricane, is predicted to make landfall Wednesday or Thursday at the gulf states.

Gaining power from the warm waters of the gulf, Hurricane Laura grew nearly 70% in just 24 hours, and is now predicted by the National Hurricane Center to be “extremely dangerous.”

Residents living in the coastal areas of Louisiana and parts of Texas were implored to evacuate, with hurricane researchers worried that not enough had.

As of Wednesday morning, Laura had maximum sustained winds of 140 mph (225 kph) as it churned about 200 miles (320 kilometers) across.

The most deadly aspect of the storm is predicted to be the storm surge, that is expected to raise the ocean level by up to 20 feet.
