A Boca Raton man accused of shooting a fellow congregant at Rosh Hashanah synagogue services will be held without bond as he awaits trial, a Palm Beach County judge ruled this morning.

Marc Benayer, 79, is in Palm Beach County Jail, where he is charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault with a firearm stemming from a shooting Tuesday afternoon at the Chabad Weltman Synagogue in Boca Raton

Benayer is accused of shooting Jonathan Samuels, 43, twice in the back during a confrontation outside the synagogue.

Samuels is a partner at Profab Electronics in Pompano Beach, where he employs a woman who is Benayer’s former girlfriend. Benayer allegedly grew angry that Samuels had been trying to help the woman get a restraining order against Benayer, investigators said.

Samuels remained in critical but stable condition this afternoon at Delray Beach Medical Center, according to police and family members.

”The doctors are positive, so that’s reassuring,” said Stephen Katz, Samuels’ brother-in-law. “This is one of those tragic situations where someone is trying to do something good for somebody, and it turns against you.”
