The following is a Blog post that has been brought to our attention and we thought it would be a good point to bring up to our readers here at CrownHeights.info. The following post was written by a Blog called ‘ChaBlog’, readers are welcome to share their thoughts on the matter.
Lubavitchers know how to argue. It’s just one of the things we’re good at. As politics rage around the world from Head Shluchim to High Schools, CrownHeights.info takes the cake. Don’t get the wrong idea; CrownHeights.info is a great news site. In just a few short years it grabbed Chabad viewers and now it’s more popular then the overrated Shmais. The content is usually good and it always has big bright pictures to go along with even the dullest articles.

My issue is not with the website, but the viewers. CrownHeights.info has a cool feature over the other chabad news sites by letting you post comments on anything. After observing these comments for a while it’s starting to get to me. On every news piece, picture, article, there is someone who has to write something stupid or senselessly negative and start an argument. Not just any arguments but heated ones where the commentators attack each other.

Op-Ed: Agree to Disagree. Please?

Don’t get the wrong idea; CrownHeights.info is a great news site. In just a few short years it grabbed Chabad viewers and now it’s more popular then the overrated Shmais.

Now I have seen these arguments come up on articles that actually had a political view and therefore people would argue out their humble opinions in the comment section. But as I was viewing the website late Motzoai Shabbos I clicked to see the comments that people were writing on Mendy Pellin’s, highly acclaimed, Mendy Report.

I was not surprised when the first comment was from someone complaining that the show was going downhill… Ok, fine the dude doesn’t like what he’s seeing and wants to make a point of it. Then a few others start to agree with the first guy… a few more start telling them off for being negative, another guy tells the guy who told them off that he has to face the truth… for goodness sake! It’s a 5 minute clip of Mendy having some fun with Charlie Buttons. It’s entertainment. That’s it!

Do you critique every video you see on youtube? No. If you don’t like it you click on the next clip. Move on with your life. But Lubavitchers just don’t seem to know how to do that. If we don’t like something, anything, we make our voice heard loud and clear (usually anonymously) over the stupidest things.

Now I guess I am sort of a hypocrite because the act of me writing this down and posting it online is just acknowledging what I am saying and now people are going to post comments if they agree or disagree… and that’s just going to prove my point. So if this post has no comments it’s because I think we would all agree!

exactly. good for you.maybe people should listen to the mothers of the world “if you have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything.” to thwe author of this article….hope this opens the eyes of the people of the world that think it is their job to be negative about everything.

• be alive!!

Sorry, but you got to admit it. Arguing makes it all the more fun. Imagine we all got along, life would be so boring.

Why do you think this web site is so popular?

Because it offers us the opportunity to argue and discuss issues.

And we like that.

Because it’s fun.

So I say, bring on the comments.

Be alive, life is for the living. After 120 you can relax and be complacent.

Now is the time to protest.

Now is the time for social unrest.

Just do it.

And most important of all, shoot down this comment. Say how it sucks, is stupid and pointless.

Because as I just mentioned, that is the point.

• CH Resident/victim of comments & crime

I think too many people don’t have enough to do, so they spend their time attacking. That’s OK if you’re attacking an idea, a philosophy, or even anyone in public office…the last one is where the problems arise.

If anyone runs for community office, on even a level like the CHJCC, he/she cannot expect to avoid negativity, even on a personal level. Just look at my all-time favorite victim, Hillary!!

I personally have nothing but contempt for the officers of the CHJCC. Why?? Because they don’t do their jobs! We are not protected, and while it is obvious that they are not responsible for an incredible upswing of crime (they are not doing the muggings!!) they NEVER come out with any statements, nor do they organize any community events to help us.

Making beautiful Purim Seudos is very nice & generous. Sponsoring Yom Tov clothing for Kolel families is admirable. But we are suffering from violence & wanton destruction of property, and I have NEVER, EVER heard any of the CHJCC officers say or do one single thing either proactively or reactively.

Now I’m sure there will be many who are saying “But behind the scenes…” That’s fine, but we are just plain, simple folk who need to see concrete actions. Or are we just too stupid to comprehend the level of sophistication that goes into a meeting with Inspector Vega? Is that why we are not kept informd?

Speaking of which, it is not only educational but entertaining to read Crownheights.info. And I appreciate the opportunity to be heard. No one else lets me vent!!

So, I think that brings me to the Kuntz…people vent & yes, attack, because their voices are never heard. The greater the frustration, the nastier the comments.

I, too, have been responsible for some “not nice” comments. Like the vast majority of posters, I curb my comments as far as possible. However, sometimes my typing finger runs away with me, especially when some posts are patronizing,or exhibit a holier-than-thou attitude. If I’m suffering, or angry/irritated about a situation, or if I’m just plain amused, supercillious comments from do-gooders, the naive, or holy-rollers bring out the worst in me, and I guess in many others too. I’ll try to do better next time.

I hope everyone has a great day…thank you All for your comments. I may not agree with you, but I’m never bored!!

• anonymous writer

Where is the name of this person that wrote this article?
He complains that people just post negative comments anonymously can you tell me what this person is doing if not doing just the thing he is complaining about in his article….he is complaining anonymously about something, if you feel SO STRONG PUT YOU NAME ON YOUR ARTICLE AND DON’T BE A WHINY WIMP that write an article criticizing everybody for doing what your doing just like everyone else anonymously just as I will remain anonymous.

• thats funny

Well, looks like the author of this article is indeed the “king of arguments”, his whole purpose in writing this to begin with is to stir up more arguments, and open up more cans of worms. Doesnt anyone get it?

• proud

yes, we argue and complain, kvetch and question. and we are proud of it. that is why sometimes people avoid us.

• Negative

The only way these negative comments will stop is if Webby does not post them

• Chana

This is just ridiculous. Obviously people will have different views that they want to express if a website allows the readers to post comments.

And another thing: why are specifically Lubavitchers the subject of your attack. If you’ve ever stumbled across a blog from Williamsburg or the like, you’ll find well over 100 comments on each post.

If you don’t like what you read, then lobby for the comments to be disabled. End of story.

• to CH Resident/victim

Thanks for pointing out nother “talent” of the Lubavitchers – the ability to turn any discussion or issue into a discussion about the CHJJC or the Beis Din etc…

What does the fact that you hate the CHJCC have to do with the content of the article?

Perhaps someone already mentioned the Community Council in a previous post, however the terrible spelling, grammar and lack of punctuation make it rather difficult to decipher many of the posts.

This of course is also a talent that we have – we seem to be incapable of stringing words and letters together in ways that make sense to the average English speaker. See the post by “dont think so” above for a prime example of this.

Agree that comments are often senseless and simply immature — lowers the caliber of the entire site.

I didn’t read any of the comments because they lose strength since they are anonymous.
I think this anonymity weakens Crownheights.info and hurts the Jewish character of this community. It makes it seem that many of its residents aren’t connected to others and they live in fear, not brotherhood/sisterhood.
WE ARE ONE FAMILY. ONE BODY-ZOHAR

To me, if a Yid (Unless it’s definitely dangerous) doesn’t state his/her name, they don’t believe in what they are writing, are NOT proud of themselves, and it, therefore is not healthy/worthy enough to be read. The writer loses impact and his/her statement becomes wishy-washy and insignificant. If the writer doesn’t want to be pestered, don’t write!
I’m certain, after a search, that I will find in Pirke Avos a teaching condemning anonymity.

To-why can-t we all just get along?
Firstly I would like to thank you for demonstrating my point.
Now you see for yourself how easy it is to get drawn into disagreement.
However I fail to see your logic.
You mention “what happened to “V’ahavta Leraiacha Kamocha”?”
And the connection is????
Never did I mention that we should hate each other.
Never did I mention that we should not love and respect each other.
All I said is that arguments and discussions are fun.

For example: I can say that apple juice is the best juice in the world. You can argue with me and maintain that orange juice is superior.
We can spend days arguing, each trying to prove our point.
Yet we can still be friends. Best friends. We can love each other.
And we can have a good time debating our opinions.
Just because you have a different opinion, and just because you choose to voice it, does not mean you hate your opponent.
Take both of us for example. I don’t know you. I probably never will. And you likewise don’t know me.
We apparently disagree. Yet I don’t hate you.
In fact, I like you, you have done me a service, a favor.
I have had an opportunity to brush up on my writing skills.
I have just spent an enjoyable half an hour coming up with an appropriate response to your critique.
Thank you.
I remain, anonymous.

I stand corrected.

I live amongst illiterate, hateful morons who can’t see the wood for the trees.

Up until today I was able to see some redeeming features in our local Yukelach; not many, but some.

Obviously I was wrong. There aren’t any.

Is that nasty enough for you??

I can get more descriptive if you like.

And no, I won’t sign my name.

• nobody impotant, but opinionated anyway

This site is a wonderful news resource, it keeps those of us who live out of the schuna updated on the goings on, and keeps all of anash up-to-date on mazal tovs. Yasher Koach!
I don’t read all of the comments posted, but the writer of ChaBlog does seem to have a good point.
Maybe the comment option should be removed from the site. People have the right to say what they want, first ammendment and all… but does it have to be in writing for all the world to read? Comments, especially directed at specific people, can come very close to being avak lashon hara.
I suppose, though, that one who reads the comments, knowing their nature, would be persuing lashon hara, which equally prohibited, as he is reading it willingly. Pehaps ChaBlog shouldn’t read the comments, as so many of us manage not to?

• CH Resident/victim of crime & comments

WOW!!!

Did I use the word “hate” when I wrote about the CHJCC? Or did I even mention the Bais Din?

If posters actually READ the articles to which they respond, their comments may have more credibility.

Obviously you have massive chip on your shoulder. Perhaps the backache you suffer from as a result makes you so cranky you can’t concentrate to read properly.

I could say more, but as I said before, I’m trying to be nice. Of course, it’s not always easy, especially when dealing with irrational people who get information wrong & respond to things that aren’t there.

Now THAT’S a big part of the problem.

• CHT

I have two points for this article:

1) crownheightsinfo should probably be cutting any insult, if it does not do so already. Insult is not acceptable and against Torah.

2) I am sure Mendy greatly appreciated critics – as far as it was not an insult. I think, as any creative person, critics is what makes him shape and become better. He can always ignore it if he wants. For instance, he always shake head left and right and let’s say someone criticize it. If he intended this to be part of his fun image, he will ignore critics, if not he will listen to it.

Everyone has their own opinions of things, which is fine, but ONE thing is not fine! and that is to argue and fight, noone can justify that at all, if people fight or argue or speak bad about others, or put others down, is because they have nothing to do in their life, and obviously they haven’t internalized the Torah in them. arguments dont bring any good. we must all learn have to have Achdus and respect others opinions, and doings.
if we argue and try to show others that what WE think is right, its because of our own Gaava, becasue we cannot stand the fact that not eveyone is agreeing with us!! so we start fighting.
but what we have to know, is that not everyone thinks like us, not everyone acts the same etc…we must respect everyone for who they are, even if they do something wrong, only rebuke if you know they will listen to you. dont heat up arguments for ‘fun’.
when I was visiting Crown Heights, what was I hearing most of the day? speach aout others, look what shes wearing, oh you know what she did yesterday? it was disscusting what she said to that one..etc..lashon hara and more ….. there is no justification for any of this according to the Torah. noone can argue with that.
I hope we will all have more Ahavas Yisrael and get along, for after all ‘kol yisroel arevim ze laze’.

You guys are all missing the point we can take care of this problem with out arguing all we need to do is someone (if I would have Webby or Techies phone number I would) should speak to either Webby or Techie & convince them to not put on the comments that argue & are not nice.

• people will be people

• OOT

This article was great, and to all those of you who complain that you like to lighten up and have some fun with senseless arguments, what bothers me is that it’s such a negative peanut gallery. I remember there was an article a few weeks ago, and a certain picture of a siddur and a out of focus girl won an award. There were comments a mile long about how it should not have won an award, how other pictures were much nicer etc etc. Come on? Who do you think you are? Peanut Gallery. The judges of the contest decided which one deserved to win, they chose that one, good for them. Who cares which one you thought deserved to win. That’s just an example. Come on, it’s fun to argue if it’s an issue that pertains somewhat to you, but if not, why write? Who cares?

• CH Resident/victim of crime & comments

Seems like you are the victim of yet another comment.
“Did I use the word “hate” when I wrote about the CHJCC?”

“I personally have nothing but contempt for the officers of the CHJCC”

Sorry. Hate was the wrong word. However, in my opinion, the fact that you have “nothing but contempt” is close enough.

It seems like you also have difficulty READING peoples post. I was merely pointing out that a vast number of Lubavitcher have the ability (and it seems, the need) to make all discussions into something they are not – you turned the original article into a CHJJC bash fest, it is inevitable that someone else will turn it into a Beis Dis bash fest.

“Obviously you have massive chip on your shoulder. Perhaps the backache you suffer from as a result makes you so cranky you can’t concentrate to read properly”

Eloquent. This statement is filed away for future use. Thanks.
