Crown Heights Riots Anniversary

Friday marks 14 years since rioting broke out in Crown Heights following a car accident that killed a 7-year-old boy.

The riots began after 7-year-old Gavin Cato, who was black, died in an accident involving a driver from the Rebbe’s motorcade.

Four days of unrest in the racially mixed neighborhood followed. On August 19th, 1991, Lemrick Nelson, who is black, then stabbed Yankel Rosenbaum, a Hasidic bochur.

In a statement on behalf of both victims’ families, a spokeman for the Rosenbaums said both of the families have gone through a lot of pain and grief and that while nothing will replace the children, the families have put their pain aside, shaken hands and cried together.
