The PTA does so many wonderful things for the kids. But why does everything have to cost so much? This fun extravaganza and later this week, there is the Hey Teves Book Fair, where kids are all expected to buy a book in honor of the day. Does Chanukah really need such an extravaganza? What messages are we sending these pure children? The idea of buying a sefer is much more important than a fancy party. Let’s send the right messages – to the kids and their parents! Priorities!
shnitzel man!

dear devorah.
kids have to have fun!!! good memories of school. yes they need books… but also good and positive memories of school…remember these are kids!!!
Devora
Sure kids need fun! But do they need such expensive fun? Rabbi Futerfas’s class had fun making those latkes – and the message was related to the holiday. I bet those boys will remember the latkes better than another moon bounce and bubble show. Kids can have fun playing with anything – anything that is not regular classroom activity is fun. Does it need to be extravagant? Do the kids really care – or is it the parents who think the kids need fancy carnival activities and shows? What did the kids do while the bubble man did his stuff? Was it so much fun? Do you rememember any of the clown shows or what other shows we watched as children?
And talking about positive memories of school – it is not the fun carnival games that make best memories of school – it is the love and warmth. Let’s work on that!

Devorah,
I have gotten much positive feedback from many boys, and mothers. That must mean it did have an effect on them, whether you think that effect is important. We collect money to not only cover ourselves for the programs, but also to cover those children who simply cannot afford these extra curricular luxuries, and hopefully profit toward other programs PTA puts out, such as the Hei Teves program. Let me make it clear- PTA does not enforce these expenses on families who cannot afford it. Another reminder, it is not more than twice (or three) times a year that PTA requests $.
