The woman then flagged down a Shomrim member who was passing and told him what happened, who in turn called in additional units who began canvassing the area immediately but were unsuccessful in spotting the perps. Police were then called and filed a police report. An important note, this incident took place one house down from where a 20 year old man was shot and killed last night.
Mugging at Gunpoint on President and Schenectady
Tuesday, at around 3:00 in the afternoon a Jewish woman walking on President St between Schenectady and Utica with her two children, was approached by two male Blacks around 20 years of age who pulled out a gun and demanded her ring, the woman removed one of her rings and handed it over the two perps then demanded more, the woman then started yelling and the two perps fled.

Why was there a delay in calling NYPD? Shomrim is terrific, but you have deadly weapons involved here. Not the best strategy to catch a perp!
thanx
its so funny who bad crown heights looks! not only now, but for a loooong time. and this website just helps proving that. thank you webby! gr-8 job.

Daniel:
Actually immediately when more Shomrim units were called, the dispatcher called police as well, given there was a possible deadly weapon involved. Its protocol for the safety of us Shomrim members.
Celeste
Have they caught the perps i hope? very unsettling.
gruntig
man this place is getting out of hand. we have got to find away to stop these things from happening anymore.
BrookAve
Ladies, if you have to go out, wear a CZ ring and 10 carat gold cheap ring. That will teach them when they try to hock it!
Mottle
gruntig the way to stop things happening is for us to get our own house in order, stop the machlokes, work on ourselves….
vB
This could be the one who mugged a woman on Crown St & Albany Ave, & took her ring.

confused
whats a perp?
innkeeper
This must be the worst summer for crime in years…
WHERE ARE THE POLICE???
Who’s doing anything about this??
As always…NOBODY.
Every Jew a .22…remember that? P’raps we need to protect ourselves as the authorities aren’t even trying.
Kudos to Shomrim, but they can’t be everywhere 24/7.
Tishrei’s coming. All these naive, non-English speaking guests who wander around at all hours, not realising they’re vulnerable to muggers etc. Can ANYONE get the word out in their languages about personal safety?
Will the kids be supervised?
Foreigners/ out of towners…DON’T SEND YOUR KIDS HERE WITH NOWHERE TO GO!! Don’t rely on me. I’m fully booked B"H!!
discreet
something I always do automatically when I leave the house by myself or with my child walking or when I ride in elevators or mass transit is I flip my rings so only the thin gold bands show and the diamonds are on the palm side. ( it calls less attentions to your hand) If I have a nice necklace I were a lightweight scarf around the neck or cover my entire head and neck area. As soon as it is cool out I’ll start with light gloves. That actually looks very elegant and keeps hands and jewelry out of the publics eye.
kaila
all i can say is, travel in numbers and expect something like this. be ready to call shomrim as soon as something looks shady. we have to be one step ahead.
crown street resident
why should we stop wearing rings and jewelry ? why can’t these shfartzas just learn not to steal.
Yates
mottle, it rained on Tuesday is that because of the machlokes?

Perp is short for a “Perpetrator”
From Dictionary.com:
per•pe•trate (pûr p -tr t )
tr.v. per•pe•trat•ed, per•pe•trat•ing, per•pe•trates
To be responsible for; commit: perpetrate a crime; perpetrate a practical joke.
Perpetrator
n : someone who perpetrates wrongdoing [syn: culprit]

The Talmud in Taanis does not list "mochlokes" as a cause for rain being withheld. But there are many other reasons that rain would come or be withheld… Yates, I know you are trying to be funny, but you are also mocking the need for this community to come together, which in this situation is essentially the same as "making light of a severe situation", in Hebrew "li’tzunis", a thing that should only be used for anti-Torah ideas.

Mottl with all due respect – get a life. we need to "come together" alright, come together and take up arms! its pathetic whats going on in crown heights lately, the real question is why isn’t anyone doing anything about it?? here’s an idea fresh out of my hat, how bout we get some of those bored "bochrim" who like to hang out on the streets to do a little patrolling on the streets instead, and maybe a little terrorising, don’t you think its time we took back crown heights. why do we need to fear walking on the streets why cant we strike fear into there eyes instead, kitzur: enough with the constant defence, lets get a little violent too and maybe one day we wont have a need for this fear…
