Los Angeles, CA — Chabad today announced the launch of FridayLight, a campaign to inspire more Jewish women and girls to experience a moment of peace and serenity by lighting Shabbat candles.

A key part of the project is FridayLight.org, a website offering information about the candle-lighting tradition, a forum for members of the FridayLight community, and free starter kits to help newcomers enjoy this unique spiritual act.

FridayLight is an innovative effort to encourage Jewish women who may not have strong religious ties to reconnect with their roots by taking time to illuminate their homes — and their lives — by lighting weekly Shabbat candles. FridayLight believes that the collective power of millions of flickering candles can spread light and peace around the globe.

“We’re helping Jewish women and girls everywhere to rediscover the warmth and serenity of lighting Shabbat candles. And by performing this special Mitzvah, they join a growing global community with an incredible power for good,” said Rabbi Ari Baitelman, Director of FridayLight. “Especially now, our troubled world needs this beautiful light to chase away the darkness.”

FridayLight.org is an interactive website that provides a complete “how to” section for visitors, as well as a place to share their own inspirational experiences and sign up for personalized reminders of lighting times. The site explains the age-old tradition in contemporary terms and invites women to “share the light” with others.

The free FridayLight Starter Kits available from the site have everything needed for a moment of inner peace, including FridayLight tea light candles and matches; a poster featuring The Blessing and the Top 10 Things You Don’t Have to Do on FridayLight; and a keepsake neck charm to help participants connect with other FridayLighters.

FridayLight also plans a Coast-to-Coast candle-lighting bus tour to foster community, inspire spiritual awakening, and promote peace. A project of Chabad-Lubavitch, FridayLight follows the vision of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, who encouraged Jewish women to unite through the Mitzvah of lighting Shabbat candles.
