Fiji, Rotuma Islands – Fiji is a perfect model of the way the world should be, say members of the Habad organisation who are at present visiting the country.

In a press conference yesterday, Rabbi Berel, said his team had come with a mission to relay a message of peace and prosperity.

“Fiji serves as a role model to the rest of the world,” he said.

“We have been on the streets since we arrived in Fiji and the people are so friendly and the hospitality of the people is just so tremendous,” Rabbi Berel said.

“We have definitely seen a change in this country compared to the other countries we visited.”

The Australia-based group said compared to visits to other countries, their trip to Fiji was different in that the majority of locals they met were Christians.

Another member of the group, Rabbi Menbel said since they arrived, they noticed that the majority of people were very strong believers and had a lot of respect for the Israelites and the Jewish people.

“The people here are so kind and it’s very touching to see that most locals believe in God,” Rabbi Menbel said.

“People are happy and they don’t need great luxuries to be happy.

”There is just this inner happiness and content with the Fijian people basically showing that God has been their source of happiness.“

The team also met President Ratu Josefa Iloilo yesterday and could not get over their conversation in which Ratu Josefa mostly referred to God.

The group said Fiji’s people needed to unite.

A Jewish soldier, Gidon Rubinstein, who came with the group, said Israelites had always admired Fijian soldiers including those who joined the security companies in the Middle East.

”It’s as if they are fighting their own battle and it’s amazing to see how they show their support.

“We would like to express our gratitude toward the local soldiers who have all contributed to peace work in the Middle East.”
