A couple of comments for Rabbi Shemtov:
First, Yasher Koach! The yearly Gimmel Tammuz event is a very special and important occasion for all of Lubavitch, and we all owe you a debt of gratitude for this.
That being said, perhaps it should be brought to your attention that many speakers who are honored to say a few words are NEVER NOTIFIED BEFOREHAND that they will be speaking, and are therefore caught off guard with nothing to say.
Perhaps it is time to ask, inform, whisper to the fellow who is going to be asked to speak, just a few minutes earlier so that he doesn’t have to suffer the embarassment of having absolutely nothing of content to share on such an auspicious day?
A couple more and then I’m done:
The Bochurim! Ribbono Shel Olam, you have sitting (standing) before you in Bais Rivka THOUSANDS of Bochurim who have come to hear some inpiring, uplifting thoughts on Gimmel Tammuz.
What do you share with them that is pertinent in their lives? What in all of the various addresses throughout the evening has any bearing on the life of your average Bochur?
No, bochurim are not busy (at this stage) with going on shlichus, they are not busy (any more) fighting the Korean war, figuring out who was a mekusher 50 years ago and who wasn’t.
Most likely, they are busy focusing on their limudim in Yeshivah, their Yiras Shomayim, their challenges, etc.
There is nothing, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING in all of the speeches, and holy words of the Great Leaders of Lubavitch today that addresses – even minutely – the life of the average bochur today.
You have the future of Lubavitch passing through your doors three, four times a year, and what have you given them when they leave? Sadly, very sadly, absolutely nothing.
[To your merit, Rabbi Yosef Weinberg was once ‘allowed’ to utter several sacrilegious words, in which he demanded that a bochur know 4-5 maamorim Baal Peh so that when he walks in the street he has something holy to think about, but, of course, that scene cannot and will not be allowed to repeat itself, right?]
Lastly, in your address on Gimmel Tammuz you made a very rash statement that seemed to infuriate many of those present.
"The only ones who have a genuine shaychus [connection] to the Rebbe are only the Shluchim!"
"Even when the Rebbe was alive, the only ones who had a real connection to the Rebbe were only the Shluchim!"
What kind of nonsense is this?
On the one hand you promote shlichus: What does a shliach teach? That every single Jew is connected to the Leader of the Generation, and in the very same mouthful you state unequivocally: The only ones who have a Shaychus to the Rebbe are ONLY THE SHLUCHIM!
What hypocrisy! What nonsense!

To Tate Zisser: Only the Holy Shluchim? So I guess the rest of us white trash are really chopped liver! Should I have that thought in my mind when I put tefilin on another Yid on the street, even if I dont have an entry in the Tzach list under "shluchim". I understood from my Rebbeim that EVERY YID is a shaliach of the REBBE and titles are just that. That whole dias is full of themselves. Perhaps the organizers for next year (Moshiach should come) should start getting the scripts written and reviewed. Your comments are right on.

Tatte Ziser,
1) Everyone who spoke on Gimel Tamuz in Beis Rivkah, knew in advance that they will speak, and I must say that for the most part of them spoke from their heart, and quite inspiring. If there were some people who were not prepared, than let them not push themselves to the stage, so they will not be called to the microphone. Just imagine ignoring someone on the dais, than you would complain: "How come this and this one were ignored"?
2) Rabbi Shemtov also did not speak about Shabbos, he did not speak about Kashrus, He did not speak about keeping the sedorim, and He did not speak about learning Nigla and Chasidus etc. etc. etc. while he had well over thousand Bochrim there. More over, even the Rebbe by farbrengen did not speak about things which are simple Shulchan Aruch, because for that you have Mashpieim and Roshei Yeshivos. On Gimmel Tamuz what we all need, and I guess that what Rabbi Shemtov thought, is the legacy of the Rebbe should remain and continue guiding our lives, and there is no one today better than Rabbi Shemtov who yet never mistaken in the Rebbes words and directions.
Tate Zisser...
My dear friend,
No, the speakers are not informed before they are asked to speak. I have heard this countless times from people who sit [I say ‘sit’ as in routinely sit] at the dias, as well as from people who have been asked to sit at the dias.
A most appropriate example of one who had this experience is Rabbi Klein from Frankfurt who was very embarassed when asked to speak without being informed beforeheand. He happened to remark to somebody that had he known that he would be speaking he would have prepared something! (Don’t give me any of that, please!)
In addition, you fail to grasp my last point.
Yes, Rabbi Shemtov is a most appropraite individular to speak about the Rebbe’s legacy.
But what, my friend IS the Rebbe’s legacy?
To the Shliach, yes, it is Shlichus indeed.
To the Mechanech, it is the Rebbes unrelenting advocasy and support for Mosdos chinuch and chinuch al taharas hakodesh.
To the Bochur in Yeshivah it is the Rebbe’s Torah, and the Rebbe’s chidushim in Torah.
To the child it is the Rebbe’s sichos at rallies, dimes for tzedakah, etc.
To the Businessman it is the Rebbe’s tecahings of how to imbue ones mundane deeds with holiness.
To the Chassidisher Yid from Boro Park it the depth of the Rebbes Torah.
I could keep on going.
No, the Rebbe’s legacy is not ONLY shlichus, and those connected to the Rebbe are not ONLY shluchim, and on Gimmel Tammuz, ALL of the Rebbe’s Chassidim deserve to be addressed and inspired, not only the Shluchim.
Gimmel Tammuz is when the Rebbe’s teachings and leadership be revisited by all those who adhere to them, not a day when we spout arrogant slogans to exalt one group of Lubavitchers (shluchim) and exclude everyone else.
We are alll the Rebbe’s Chassidim!
Toishev Hashechuna
To Tate ziseer you are so right. I am an avg. yungerman from Crown Heights who wants to be inspired on Gimmel Tamuz. The only thing Rabbi Shemtov will talk about is the Shluchim nobody else exists, this is in my opinion why there are so few Balebatim there
May I add I think it is time to learn a Maamer together at these Farbrengens where everyone will get a copy etc.
yossi h.
Rabbi A. Shemtov yoshev Rosh of AGUCH, and Rabbi L. Shapiro from Yeshiva Gedolo of Miami, were the best speakers, all the rest of the speakers were at best NOT TERRIBLE .However in comparison to 770 it was unbelivably GREAT, over there you only heard one thing from all the speakers(Except for HORAV Osdoba ) Yechi Adoneinu Moshe Rabeinu etc etc etc…… b.t.w.there were speakers in B.R. that are insulting themselfs when they speak, and the M.C. has an Aveiro when he tells them to speak… Rabbi L. Shapiro spoke short , nice , Hartzik and very chasidishe, Rabbi Shemtov spoke more like a world Orathor he kept the OILOM on SHPILKES for over an half hour, he is SO POWERFUL it is just unbelivable.
yossi
i know for a fact that avremel never asks the speakers beforehand! rabbi klein felt so bad…
to Tate Zisser..right on!!
To Tate Zisser:
You hit the nail on the head! I don’t know who you are, but YOU should have been the one at the microphone – be it at Bais Rivka, or 770!
We are ALL the Rebbe’s chasidim/children, and why must anyone denegrate others to feel complete?
Thank you for putting it straight

I totaly agree, but sometimes people are so caught up in saying how arrogant and exluding the shluchim are ( which i definetely wont say they arent), that they sometimes forget what the shluchim DO, what they do for lubavitch and how they TOTALY AND COMPLETELY give themselves over to the rebbe and their work. dont you think they deserve a little recognition? for living so far away, some of them not knowing where they’ll get food for the next months event, their children completely without friendship till 6th/7th grade, not to say CH"V that they are the only ones mekushar to the rebbe but they are in fact doing the rebbe’s work and in a very strong way – there is no reason to deny it! on the other hand they can also get very caught up with themselves….
