Good Deeds Awards A Major Success
On a sunny Tuesday afternoon, May 16, 2006, more than 600 people congregated at the Supreme Court of Mineola, NY to witness some very deserving teenagers receive the “Good Deed Award.”
“The Good Deed Award” is the brain child of Rabbi Anschelle Perl, director of NCFJE Long Island. Since much of publicity that teens get these days is negative, Rabbi Perl was looking for a way to focus the spotlight on children who are doing the right thing and give them public endorsement and credit – and so Good Deed Awards were created.
The awards went to teens that were nominated by their educators, clergy, peers, or community leaders. These teens represent the best and the brightest of Long Island’s youth. Their positive impact, activism and leadership are acknowledged in the “Good Deed Awards.”
“The teenagers, their parents, and the guest were excited and uplifted from this momentous event,” said Rabbi Perl. “It was truly inspiring.”
Rabbi Shea Hecht, Chairman NCFJE, said “It was amazing to see so many community and government leaders show their support to the next generation of future leaders.”
This year’s guest speaker was DA Kathleen Rice. She spoke about how teens that get involved in their community in a positive way are inspirational role models for all – despite their young age.
Other presenters of awards were:
Scott Rosen – Pres Long Beach Vacuum and Cleaning Supplies
Leonard Leeds – Senior Partner Leeds Morelli & Brown
Leonard Samansky – Mayor Village of Saddle Rock
John Spellman – Senior Partner, Spellman Rice etal.
Judge Carnell Foskey, Supervising Judge of Family Court
Mayor Robert W. Hinck Sr – former Mayor of Mineola
