Toronto has a Softball League, and the Lubavitchers Won!

TORONTO, Canada [CHI] — Last night, September 21 the Lubavitch softball team of Toronto won the Bnai Brith Championship. Led by Shua Cole, Ari Weiss, Shmuli Wachtel and Nachman Forer and generously sponsored by State Farm Insurance, Lubavitch went 4 and 0 in the playoffs to capture the crown for the first time. When asked about prospects for next season all team Captain Ari Wiess had to say was “I just want to enjoy the moment”.

The games final score was 22 – 21.

The game started off badly for Lubavitch with a few errors in the first 2 innings and getting into a huge hole by a score of 16-3. But in the top of the third with one out Lubavitch took control.

Nachman Forer singled and 2 batters later Shua Cole hit a 3-run-homerun to put the team on his back and send a message that they were not letting this game slip away from them. By the time the top half of the 3rd inning was over the score was 16-15.

There was not much scoring for the next 3 innings up until the top of the final inning when Lubavitch was down 21 – 18. Lee Fienstien led off the inning with a solo homerun over the center field wall. The next batter got out and than Ari Wiess hit a very crucial triple. Two batters later Danny Holland walked. That set the stage for Nachman Forer. With two outs and two men on base and down by two runs Nachman Forer hit an opposite field 3 run homer to take the lead for the first time in the game 22 – 21.

An inning previously, Shua Cole made a daring promise to the team that if we getting him the lead he will pitch the team to victory, which he did and Lubavitch won.

As he was walking out of the stadium weary from a very long game Shmuli Wachtel was quoted as saying “I am very proud of our team, we played together all season, never getting down and always believing and having the confidence that we would win it all”. Team mascot Eli Stuart (Stewie) said “this game summed our entire season, where nothing can get in the way of a strong determination.”

Bnai Brith Baseball league of Toronto is the biggest Jewish baseball league in the world, they boast close to 100 teams every year.
