The blood stained Van and Sidewalk.

About a month ago, CrownHeights.info reported the mugging and vicious beating of a 14 year old Bochur on the corner of Carroll and Schenectady.

About a week after the incident, the father of the Bochur began getting calls from the stolen phone. When the Bochur's mother called the phone, the boy who answered was surprised to hear that the phone was stolen. He began to explain that he bought the phone for $40 from a boy named Levon, who got the phone from Issaiah. He also told the Bochur's mother where Issaiah lives and where they all go to school. In middle of the conversation, his sister got on the phone and said that she wanted to have nothing to do with stolen goods and Levon assured her that it was a prepaid phone.

NYPD Apprehend Vicious Mugger

The blood stained Van and Sidewalk.

About a month ago, CrownHeights.info reported the mugging and vicious beating of a 14 year old Bochur on the corner of Carroll and Schenectady.

About a week after the incident, the father of the Bochur began getting calls from the stolen phone. When the Bochur’s mother called the phone, the boy who answered was surprised to hear that the phone was stolen. He began to explain that he bought the phone for $40 from a boy named Levon, who got the phone from Issaiah. He also told the Bochur’s mother where Issaiah lives and where they all go to school. In middle of the conversation, his sister got on the phone and said that she wanted to have nothing to do with stolen goods and Levon assured her that it was a prepaid phone.

When the Bochur’s mother contacted the detectives involved in the case, they instructed her to set up a meeting to get the phone back. While setting up the meeting, the girl told the Bochur’s mother “I hope you’re not setting me up”.

The meeting was to take place at 11:30pm in front of a McDonald’s. The Bochur’s mother along with a friend drove to the Bronx, following a car with two detectives from the 71st Precinct. After about ten minutes of waiting, the girl showed up and began to hand over the cell phone when the two police came over asked the mother to go back into her vehicle.

The detectives took the girl and her brother to the local police station for questioning. The girl was very cooperative and the police were able to find Levon and put him in custody shortly thereafter. Levon who wasn’t as cooperative, was kept in jail over night till he gave the police enough information on Issaiah. Issaiah remained elusive from the police for a few days, until an early morning visit by the detectives to the group home where Issaiah lives. The ‘good Samaritan’ who stopped the attack on the Bochur, was asked to pick him out from a line-up, which he did correctly.

This past Thursday, the Bochur, his mother and the ‘good Samaritan’ all appeared before a Grand Jury where they testify against Issaiah. As we wait for the sentence to be handed down; Issaiah who is 18 years old, is in jail and will hopefully stay there for a long time.

I would like to thank the NYPD for solving at least this one out of the many muggings and assaults.

By the way… Issaiah sold the phone to Levon for 6 dollars!!

  • More charges...

I wonder if you can bring charges against the aunt for harboring a criminal or aiding an abetting a criminal since I remember you mentioned she was not very cooperative and complained that you where disturbing her sleep.

  • 6 doolors a cell

thats pretty cheap for a phone
that it self should be a reason to think it was stolen

  • Chaim

We should only hope every horrible mugging is solved this way. Remember- get a calm description of the African American perp- hair, eyes, facial features, clothing, speech, etc. Help the NYPD help us. We criticize the NYPD all the time, but ONLY the NYPD has the skill and ability to catch these miserable perps.

  • lives on Carroll & Schnectady

Our community leaders must make a concerted effort to bombard the precint and all city official offices to get a grip on the crime in our neighborhood!

Baruch Hashem this troublemaker was caught

  • not from around here.....

I am thrilled to hear that he is in custody. One less criminal on the streets.

  • mendy

btw to all those that say the police are doing nothing…

either way at least one less thug on the streets of crown heights!!

  • GJ

WOW!! Great work Mendy’s Mom, Mendy, Mendy’s Dad, Good Samaritan, and NYPD!

The Grand Jury onnly decides IF the person can be tried altogther so it doesn’t mean much in the way of a sentence. There is still a whole trial ahead IF he is convicted by the Grand Jury.

I personally testified in front of the Grand Jury with witnesses etc. againts a repeat burgular who forced his way into my apartment and stole from me. The Grand Jury was mostly black and just let him go.

The bochur who apprehended him has since been threatened by this burgular whenever they cross paths.

I hope THIS Grand Jury agrees that there is enough evidence for a trial.

Please keep us posted on the outcome.

again typos etcetera. . . should be apprehends. . . oh you dont get a sentence from a grand jury, just an indictment.

    COME ON

  • Finally

    B"H
Maybe this is a change toward the good, the nypd is doing something worthwhile, may they go from strength to strength in catching those criminals – the ones who comitted crimes and the ones who have not yet – and kudos to the mother who was brave enough to go to thie set up in the "BRONX"…wow!

  • a wiseman

They have to enact a law that any time a shvartzer hits a chabadnick, eventhough he may say the motive was money, it should automaticly be charged as a hate crime, and put the sucker away and throw away the key.

BEtter yet, send him to iraq for 3 years.

the group home where Issaiah lives
    _________________________________

What is a group home? Aren’t they meant for those who need supervision? If that is the case, someone ought to investigate and discipline whoever was responsible for allowing this Issaiah onto the streets where he can steal and commit assault!

In any case, BH the bochur is OK now, and Issaiah will sit in the can where he belongs. For once, honest citizens won against criminals.

  • Keep Them coming

wow this is an amazing cover of this story, may there be many more of these kind of stories to read on this website, thanks Ben.

  • zxcv

Boruch Hashem, the mugger was caught.
If the mugger was from the Bronx, why was he in Crown Heights? Is he part of a gang? Is Levon a fencer for stolen goods?

  • GJ

    COW,

Using the word "sentence" in place of "indicment" is not a typo. It is a result of not being able to come up with the correct term and, therefore, using the nearest one that comes to mind.

I am sure that’s never happened to you, oh sacred cow.

  • 1o

wow! what a gr8 story, one less thug off the streets, and one mother satisfied. gr8 work nypd and gr8 story webby:)

  • To all those praising the NYPD,

To all those praising the NYPD,

It was the boy’s parents who did the work, NOT the police. all the police did was make the arrest and take the credit after the parents found out who had it, and the parents made arrangements for the return.

    think about it.

  • chaya

yay!!!!!!!!!!!!! thank you for solving this one! hopefully they will solve all the other ones as well. (maybe taking a little shorter and doing their own investigation without having the mom find out!)

  • whats it matter 2 u?

Sorry mus have missed something – why was mendys father getting calls from his son’s stolen phone?

  • recovering

i have to share a story so this never EVER happens again to anyone: late last wednesday night I was walking through Vezina Park alone. a young male approached me and tryed to put his hands in my pockets. i pushed him off and he punched me twice, one in the eye which left me a black eye and once on my jaw which left me a nasty looking bruise. When i got home i called the police and they did absolutely nothing! maybe it’s just becuse i live in montreal and they do nothing here, but the morral is to all the montreal readers, NEVER EVER WALK IN VEZINA OR KING MCENZI PARK ALONE! THEY HAVE TONS OF SKIN HEADS AND LATINO’S LOOKING TO MUG AND HURT PEOPLE! this has happened before and the police do nothing! take the long way! it’s better to walk 10 extra mins. then leave with wounds!

  • ìéôà ùðéìöòø

    an amazing ending
btw:any update on the bucher’s condition

  • you may run but you cant hide

can any one tell us where this guy lived, im curios to know from how far they travel to beat us.

hey shomrim when you catch a guy and hold him for police can you get a photo and put him up on the web for all to see on a special web sight

criminals dont like public photos and if you get a shot you can be pretty sure this guy may not want to come back to the naiborhood bc he will be recognized

  • CAMERAS MY FRIENDS

CAMERAS is the best tool to use today it is not expensive carry it in your pocket.
set one up in your ally lets give them no oportunity

  • a freind

i think it was hate b/c they just jumped him from behind and didnt bother asking for money at all first

  • To answer some of your questions

It can’t be proved in any way who the "aunt" was. For all we know it was just a girlfriend saying she was his aunt. Why did she say he was 16 when he is really 18? So no, we can’t press any charges against her.

Issaiahs official address is in Yonkers and we don’t know what he was doing in Crown Heights, though we do know he goes to school in Bushwick.

    About the Group home…
Since Issaiah is 18, the home legally cant force him to do anything, it appears he just uses the place sometimes to sleep

The phone was found and the attacker apprehended due mainly to the stupidity of the teenagers that were calling the contacts on Mendys phone. If issaiah gets sentenced to jail, that will due mainly to the testemony of the
    " good Samaritan"
And yes there is an order of protection against issaiah for Mendy and the "good samaritan"

  • *chavi

this calls for a *chavi comment.

good news. :-) that shows how stupid they are. (sorry for my honesty, and i’m not complaining.)

and to hear that some people think crown heights is ‘uneventful’
theres not one day i can pass up on checking up on this site with out some finding out some new pretty interesting things..

like some SMART guy who pays 6 dollars for a cell phone..but hey..i’m not pointing fingers

or a guy who shot another guy in the face..

    the list goes on..

  • me

"He began to explain that he bought the phone for $40"
    it was $4 not $40

  • mom did the work

It is mostly true that the mother/parents did the tracking down of this creep, but I am surprised the cops even followed up on the info. I had a similar situation of a stolen phone (B"H nobody hurt), got hold of the guy who had it or bought it, and the cops said, "just call the phone service and close your account" they were not up to following up on it.
Hurray for the good guys for once!

  • curious

    Wait webby…
It was the bachur’s parents who soloved it. All the nypd did was tell the parents to claim the cell so the detectives can follow.
You should thank the parents. Because of them we have one less moron on the street

  • crown-orio

good work`mother of mugged kid. take these shvartzes off the streets.

  • To Me

Issaiah sold the phone to Levon for 6 dollars…
Levon sold the phone to Alan for 40 dollars and Alans sister wanted to sell the phone back for 60 dollars.

  • To suprised cops followed up

Cops followed up on this one because Issaiah almost killed Mendy…. it wasn’t about a stolen phone. The phone is what led to the attacker.

  • happily ever after......

all these muggings should end like this one.(NOY SAYING THEY SHOULD HAPPEN!)
