MTV With Matisyahu In Crown Heights

Throughout the day yesterday MTV hung around Crown Heights with Matisyahu in preparation for a new music video and interview. They began in Hadar Torah where the interview took place followed by a Minyan for Mincha on the porch of Matiyahu’s House, then a game of Hocky on rollerblades with a group of Bochurim, all of which is planed to be featured in this new music video.

    I dont think its somthing to be so proud of as chassidshe people we should not be so proud that MTV came to CH.
    I am pretty surprised you even mentioned it. I would rather be proud to say that my kids still do not know what MTV is. Matysui is not what I have my kids listening to. I do know some kids are tuning in to z100 so they can hear him sing, which is causing them to listen to plenty of other crap. He should not excatly be made a hero.

    i just got back from israel this morning .
    while waiting online this guy started to chat with me asking me where im from and what not.. when i said ch hes like wow cool matisyahu, 770
    hes like i love his music …etc. so we started talking bout mattie being on mtv
    he then tells me
    my older brother wasnt that religous and listening to mat has changed him. not only him other people too!!

    holy cow – how very cool – oh thanks Chani for putting cold water on the baby – shees someone has to say something negative all the time. Grow up and get married LOL…so happens my 1st cousin is now closer to frumkeit in Houston TX b/c of his music and background go figure – besides most of the kids listen to z100 regardless or are you one of the people wih heads in the sand. if your kid is chassidush and sits and learns great he won’t be effected trust me…the others were and do listen to this stuff wether you like it or not ..just one of those things.

    u should be outraged at this matisyaho.look what he is bringing to crown heights mtv. this is what we are teaching our kids. to go watch mtv.is this going to help us daven,learn, tznious etc. better. did any mashpia approve this? where are our leaders . i guess we dont have any leaders.its everyone do what u want . soon we will wake up and we wont have any of our kids want to hear about torah , davening, all they will want is more mtv garbage and i dont even want to say what else.

    i support matisyahu, and i hope if he reads this he wont be turned down from the people making bad comments about him. this is what the rebbe wanted, he wanted the world to know about moshiach. to even hear the word moshiach on Z100 shows that we are living in the times of moshiach, im sure the rebbe is smiling because of matisyahu. how is this diffrenet then what cunin does every year with the holywood starz on his telethon? why dont people have a problem with that? i think tis beautiful, absolutely beautiful! this is another way of spreading yiddishkiet and moshiach, this IS mivtzoim.

    I am not a Lubavitcher, however I do live with my husband and children in Crown Heights. We live here simply because of the community. As a non Libavitcher, living as a guest in YOUR boro, let me tell you one thing. In no other Jewish sect would a figure like Matisyaho exist. No other Jewish individual would have the courage to take a leap of faith as he did. Only a true Lubavitcher would have the courage to ‘go out there’ and take a chance. He is a role model to many people. His music speaks only truth. For those of you who do not accept him,….. Look at him as a Shleach world wide. His music is listened to by a large majority of young Jewish individuals.

    I do not hold by M either and that is putting it mildly, but even for those who see the positive in it, it is clear that the music is not meant for our kids or young adults.

    As for MTV, it is so alien to me that I could care less what they do in CH so long as those who appear in the video do so voluntarily, and that others are not photographed and included in the video as part of the scenery.

    MTV is looking to get a hechsher from OK labs in an effort to appeal to the Jewish Community. Jennifer lopez’s elbows will be censored, Madonna’s voice will be disguised and Maria Carey’s hair will be covered. Lyrics will be re-written shlock rock style to promote torah and mitzvos.

    Get real! MTV is not targeting the religious jewish market yet so calm down.

    Matisyahu does great hafotzo with people that would otherwise never be exposed to Judaism; BUT I also think it’s not for our kids, and they should not be listening to this – and I venture to say that Matis would agree that he is not aiming at our kids
    No mashpia would approve of it.

    what is MTV doing roaming the streets of ch? what is this teaching our kinderlach? what can i answer my daughter when she asks me who those people are? this is what leads our children to going off the derech! when your children are seen doing things you would never want them to do you should know why! they see a frum lubavitcher on MTV and think that its ok. you will soon realize this when the new generation is not the proper lubavitcher that we know and we care about.

    This is an amazing thing – what Matisyahu is bringing to the world. He’s spreading the concepts of Moshiach, Yiddishkeit, etc. No, it’s not for our kids. That’s what we have to remember. It is a tool to use to mekarev people.

    Do you do only as your "leaders" tell you?

    If your kid’s don’t want to learn the Torah or for that matter – partake in anything at all – it’s NOT your "leaders" fault and it’s NOT Matisyahu’s fault.

    You said: "I guess we don’t have any leaders?" Does that include yourself? I guess some people find it easier to blame others than get out in front and set the example!

    Matisyahu is doing a tremendous job reaching out to secular jews as well as to non jews. It might not be what some of you are use to, but he is bringing more jews back to yiddeshkeit than anyone else out there…

    Just see how he effects the local youngsters who don’t really find a place in the community and in Yeshiva, for that alone he should be commended!!!

    With all due respect, there was no promotion or PR for mtv or z100 at the game. So whoever knows or thinks that anyone playing the game was advocating any of the above networks/ entertainment stations; i must say, my presence as a spectator and witness was about fellow Jews playing hockey for a great pass time after school hours and nothing more. For those who do get offended for whatever reason, please know that matisyahu gave out signed cds so who ever chooses can hear his music not a tv or radio 4 me 2 tune in. So blaming matisyahu for goyim requesting to listen or watch him sing via the media doesnot mean that his demographic is CHASSIDISH KIDS or should i say your’S children. And btw its ok for you to see the cup half empty, but i see it half full.

    instead of blaming matisyahu for what your kids will listen to, explain to them that his music is simply not catered to them! it’s for not frum/ not jewish people. just like men and boys can’t listen to a jewish women sing, this music is not appropriate for frum, lubavitch kids. if they are old enough to make theri own choices, and they choose to listen to the radio they’ll listen even if matisyahu is on the radio or not! so let everyone stop blaming one another and grow up! it’s your job to educate your children to make the right choices. if you’ve made sure to educate your kids the proper way and G-d forbid they make the wrong choice, it’s between them and Hashem! let’s all stop arguing, it’ll bring Moshiach a lot sooner!

    yet, one must recgonize that Matisyahu’s appeal is not from within our community. It is not for us to restrict him.
    Do you have any idea of how many people he awakened the pintle yid within?
    I think most Lubavitchers are shepping Nachas from Matisyahu, even if you do not like his music.
    He is not nespaol from anyone and lives with Lichatchila ariber.

    I support Matisyahu. I don’t like people who blame everything all around. There’s shtus everywhere, HALEVAI, that the children who are interested in shtus, should find matisyahu interesting. It would be my dream come true for my kids, if they were going off the track, additionally, it should be our biggest tzura! :)

    Matisyahu is spreading Chasidus. He is preparing the world for Moshiach.

    The Baal Shem Tov asked Moshiach ‘when will you come?’ and Moshiach’s answer was ‘when your teachings, Chasidus, spread to the outside.’

    Well Matisyahu is doing exactly that. Think of something here. Matisyahu’s first CD came out with like 12 songs. Only one song mentioned Moshiach in it a few times, King Without a Crown. What song is his most popular song? What song is always played on MTV (or so I’m told :))? King Without a Crown.

    Matisyahu is doing a huge part in spreading Chasidus to the outside. He is helping in a huge way to bring Moshiach. Now stop wasting your time talking about Matisyahu. Go out there do a Mitzvah and help Matisyahu bring Moshiach.

    Matisyahu is an amazing KIDUSH HASHEM AND KIDDUSH LUBAVITCH.

    Matis does everything that the Rebbe wants from every chosid. He goes to the mikvah every morning (even on the road – when it’s often difficult to get to a mikvah), davens with a minyan, has steady shiurim.

    On stage, Matis always proudly wears a yarmulka, tzitzis are alwyas clearly hangin out. Bear is full, not picked, the yarmulka is large, not fashionably cool.

    Matis speaks about the Rebbe, Chassidus and most importantly Moshiach, WITH LESS SHAME THEN MANY SHLUCHIM!

    And most imprtantly, Matis has the attention of the world and especially the kids. He is using the spotlight, not to endorse sneakers or the latest soft drink, but to spread yiddishkeit and the Rebbe’s message.

    What shoudl you tell your children when they see MTV in Crown Heights?? Tell them that Matis is proud to be a Jew and a Lubavitcher, even when there is tremendous pressure to do otherwise. Let you child see that it’s ok to proudly wear your yarmulka and tzitzis out. Let your child see that it’s ok to have a full beard. Tell your child that Matis is the ultimate Lubavitcher! He does nt care about what the world thinks is right. He does what he knows the Rebbe wants.

    And when you have a chance, go to a show. Watch 3,000 people jump up and down to "Sheyiboneh Bais Hamikdash", watch the crowd get excited about hearing Moshiach. I’ve been to a number of shows, and almost always, the crowd breaks out in a "we want Moshiach" chant. Thosands of people, Jewish and Goyim chanting for Moshiach!!!! How many times does that happen at an Avraham Fried concert?

    I have a little secret for all you perfect moms out there. Yor kids are not listening to Nichoach. They have not been listening to Avraham Fried, MBD or Yaakov Shmecky for years. They’ve been going to clubs and watching MTV since Matisyahu was in Elementry school. How do I know? Just look at the way they dance at weddings in Oholei Torah. They did not pick that up listening to Nichoach volume 3. Matis is not attracting your children to Z100 or MTV. Your kids have been listening to Z100 and MTV long before Matis came around. Fortunetly, Matisyahoo is bringing some yiddishkeit to the airwaves!

    mayim hameoirerim – metaher tmeim vemetamei tehorim!! His music is (I guess) so much higher than regular pop trash that for the tamei, the goy or the Jew who has not been exposed to Torah, it brings him up. But for Chassidim, it is coarse ghetto music with lyrics that really don’t always make sense – so for unzerer it is a step down!

    I have one minor question– I see lots of people are concerned that there children will see Matisyahu on MTV. Does that mean you have a TV in your house with Cable? If you are so concerned for them seeing MATISYAHU on MTV what are you doing with the TV in the first place? Where did Z100 come into the picture – How do "YOU know what Z100 is?

    Just to clarify, it seems my comment was not understood or purposely attacked… either way
    I have tremedous respect for Matisyahu, I think he is doing terrific work, hafotzo as I said before. I point him out on the street to my kids when he’s just walking down the street looking like a chosid, etc
    What I also convey to my children is that his music is for others, not chassidishe children, it’s for hafotzi, etc
    I am not so naive as to think my older kids don’t listen to anything but Nichoach (although one does, of her own accord, hurray for her!), but they should know the standard we strive for, no?

    Mattisyahu is amazing! He is so good! He is bringing so much good to the world. Let me just say one thing, I hope that you are monitoring what your children are listening to and watching. If your children know what MTV and Z100 is, then they must have known it from before. Obiously, then you have a TV in the house. Dont expect to have a TV in the house, and then your kids be little angels watching cartoons and the news. We are living in a new generation. Plus, if your kids are listening to the radio, it didnt start now from MAttisyahu. Mattisyahu is amazing, and keep up the good work!

I once called him on his cell, and he asked me if I can call back in few since he was going to be late for the minyan for mincha… he isn’t a bad influence, and like so many other people have already said, he is only bringing Gashmiyus into Ruchniyus, this is what the rebbe wanted, to let the world know what we are really about and not just roll with the punches, hiding in our own private jewish lives but to spread the message… as for our kids, it’s all up to us in how we raise them… Moshe.

    I was at a Matisyahu show here is SoFLa last month…he played for 8,000 people and he had 8,000 people singing with him about Hash-m and Moshiach and the Beis HaMigdash and Jerusalem (if I forget you!!).

    Some people just are afraid that Matis represents Chabad becoming a pop philosophy, like the Kabbalah Center, and that he may project an image that is hepech what we really should project.

    As for losers, we can just as soon say that most of the pro-Matis comments come from teenagers who are star-struck and do not understand the real situation.

    I have no idea what his long-term impact will be and where his career will go (and professionally I am probably in a position to make more than an educated guess after doing the proper research, but it is not my business to do so, unless someone wants to pay me to do it and even then I doubt I’d be interested).

    We need to wait and see what happens, and to be careful not to teach our children to worship celebrities, even if they are from our own community.

    At the end of the day, there are seven Chabad celebrities – unzerer Rebbeim – and in our generation the Rebbe is THE celebrity!

    I’m From CA I take a train to Cheder. One morning while waiting for the train a mexican opens up his CD case and shows me The CDs Live at Stubb’s and Youth and he was UPSET he couldn’t get Shake Off the Dust…. Arise he heard it was very good. Then he comes on the train pulls out his phone and starts playing his cool MATISYAHU ring tones. He even knows half the thing by heart a week after it came out. On the other hand I was on Mivtzoim before Pesach with two Bochurim giving out Matzoh. They were playing Youth in the car and both were singing with it. I think that this is really something great, people are talking Chassidus the WHOLE day even if they don’t realize it.

    The song Dipatch the Troops is awesome, and I can’t wait for the DVD to come out.

    I am on shlichus and work with college students coming from the most assimilated and secular homes. I can tell you first hand that he has had and continues to have a most amazing tremendous effect on these young people! They are more interested in yiddishkeit and chassidus because of him. They are finding out about concepts and values in Torah and Chassidus which they had no idea about. They are more interested and willing to meet and listen to a shliach of the Rebbe because of this.

    It may not be for our children, but that is a decision that YOU as a PARENT needs to make. Blamers will always find someone or something to blame.

    I know from my first hand experience meeting him and from other shluchim that this is a chasideshe yid. Halevay there should be many more like him with his true dedication and emmiskeit.

    hey you all that think matisyahu is rubbish beside looking at the negative look at the good hes doing- ive heard of countless of stories or non religious teenagers prefering to listen to his cds which have given them encouragement rather than the non jewish stuff…personally i love his song yoth..and its something finally for the younger crowd besides for the same old boing stuff, and plz dont be happy some of us are actually listenging to jewish music now- before him i was listening to only non jewsh bc jewsh cds cost a bomb…

    you all need to get a life this is sooooo sad that you people are wasting your brilliant thoughts on this. matisyahu is great to listen to, and if you dont want your kids listening to z100 or watching mtv then dont let them listen to him, but for gods sake leave him alone hes just a guy trying to do what he loves for a living and hes having alot of success. maybe some of you cant handle that but thats your problem. gp find something worthwhile to talk about.

    i am not religouse but listening to matisyahu has made want to put on tefilin every day. matisyahu is a great roe model. i am trying to make my music positive now . pplease dont bash him. i am only 17 and i knew their were going to be people who didn’t like him. i have alot of rappers as my role model but now he is my role model. matisyahu don’t listen to these people. your a great guy and i am inspired by your music. i am from a school where violence is a problem gangs fighting . and listening to him lets know i dont have to be violent. please dont post bad stuff about the guy. and matisyahu keep doing what youre doing. hopefully i could meet you someday and give you some of mu music. i think he is the greatest thingthat ever happened to music. much support. let your kids buy the cd just tell them not to listen to the radio it’s not that hard.

    i cant think of a better way to stick it to the spirits of the subhumans who built the camps, than to see this young man stand proud and popular in a modern world.
    the song has a universal appeal and its great to see someone who can achieve this and remain true to his culture and beliefs.

    I think Matisyahu is real because he was just like every other secular and goy in the world and had an epiphany. I personal findhis incredibly spiritual and enpowering and uplifting and makes me not only interested in revisiting my roots, but reinvesting something in my relationship with God. I have found this with everyone I have spoken to that has heard his lyrics because he is exactly who he is… Matisyahu.

    I’m not sure if certain people read this still but I will post here anyway. I am a 30 year old Canadian male. I have Matisayo -Youth CD. My wife bought it for me after I saw King Without a Crown Video and said I would like it.

    Here is a little bit of a twist. I am a Christian. I believe in the same God that you do, and am expecting the Messiah soon…I believe the prophets speak the truth and that my generation will see Him. Our beliefs are a little different though. I believe that He has come once and is returning again to set up His kingdom, you believe that He is coming for the first time. I do recognize that the Jews are God’s chosen people, and that God says that the friends of Isreal are the friends of God’s. I have a deep desire to visit Isreal one day and meet some of God’s chosen people. I love the passion in the Matisyaho’s music. I love the zeal I hear in his voice. This is what I look for in other musicians as well. Now that that has been said, Matis, when I get to Isreal I expect to get to play a little bit of hockey with you. – Rod
