Chabad of Cobb wasn’t taking any chances after one of its members informed its administration that someone was impersonating a Chabad rabbi and going door-to-door in east Cobb neighborhoods soliciting funds for Israel.

“One of our congregants was told by a friend — who wants to remain anonymous — about what was happening,” said Rabbi Ephraim Silverman, Chabad of Cobb’s spiritual leader. “Once we learned about this incident, we wanted to quickly set the record straight,”

Part of an e-mail sent by Sherry Kornheiser, Chabad’s administrator, to all its congregants last week read:

“We want to make it very clear that we do not know this person, that we have not endorsed his solicitations, and it is our firm policy that under no circumstances do we release personal information.

“We are asking you to please keep this in mind if this man should approach you for a donation.”

Silverman said no one had called with any additional information since the e-mail was sent.

“We have received plenty of ‘thank you’ responses,” he said.

No police reports have been filed and no descriptions of the impersonator are available.
