KERHONSKSON, NY [CHI] — A Bar Mitzvah Bochur is supposed to display his maturing at the age of 13. “Now you become a man” he is told by guests at his Simcha. His parents buy him a hat and jacket and he falls in with the adults. It is the day the father makes the blessing “Boruch Sheportrani” and the Bochur says a Ma’amar by heart. He is the center of attention with all his friends dancing around him in the joy of his Simcha. Physically
Yesterday though, the Bar Mitzvah Bochur Hatomim Menachem Mendel Mintz made a different display of ability, as he was assisted up onto the stage in his small wheelchair. Mendy suffers from Ostogen Imperfecta (a disease which causes bones to fracture easily) and he is assisted by those around him in order to function.

“The doctors told us that he won’t survive birth, heaven forbid” said a family member at the end of the Bar Mitzvah celebration which took place in the Hudson Valley Resort in Kerkoshen, NY “[Mendy’s] condition is a very rare one and the doctors told us that he has very little chance. For the following months we frequented the Ohel and Davened for him.”
The Bar Mitzvah took place alongside the JLI conference, and with the attendance of around 300 Rabonim and Shluchim Mendy Mintz celebrated his coming of the age of Mitzvos with his reciting an extensive Pilpul which covered interesting pieces of Gemoro and Halacha. With his young voice and no hesitation he wowed and griped the crowd.
“We merited miracles above and beyond” admitted his father, Rabbi Efraim Mintz who heads up the Jewish Learning Institute [JLI], his wife Shaina added: “he [Mendy] has such strong willpower, the personality of a warrior that will do everything in his power to succeed”

The boys in Oholei Torah have amazing Ahavas Yisroel. They take Mendy with his wheelchair to all teh farbrengens and birhtday parties. They even make sure that someone visits him every shabbos. It is teh most heartwarming sight to see these small kids carry their friend up the stairs without any complaints. Rabbi lustig you can be proud of your talmidim.
