A number of years back when Mayor David Dinkins passed before the Rebbe during the distribution of dollars, he said to the Rebbe that he hoped that “our two communities” can live together in peace. The Rebbe responded that it is one community where we all live together.
Most attacks against Jews in our community are perpetrated by black youth. (I challenge anyone to point out the last time a Jewish resident of Crown Heights cornered anyone and asked him to hand over his wallet.). However, that does not mean that the crime in our community is a Jewish issue. It is a community crisis that affects black and white residents alike.
Op-Ed: Would Everyone Just Shut Up and Unite!!
It is times like these that we need unity. Unity doesn’t just refer to us Jews, we need unity among ALL the residents of the Crown Heights community–blacks and Jews.
We have a significant amount of hate crimes in this community. Many crimes that occur in Crown Heights, whether classified as such or not, are in fact hate crimes. Most likely the attack on Thursday night was a hate crime, based on the vicious nature of the attack. However, it is troubling that after every incident, there is a rush to label it as an “Anti-Semitic” attack. That is something that doesn’t do our cause or our community much good.
Overall, the march on Friday, which caught the attention of police brass and the mayor’s office, was a great success. It was a grass-roots effort that was organized by two bochurim who chose to remain anonymous. If you are wondering why there wasn’t more press coverage, it is noteworthy that communal ‘leaders’, fearing a poor turnout, stated that the march was canceled. Although they weren’t the organizers, they later presented themselves as such.
What was troubling about the march was hearing the slogans that some of the young people were shouting. One of them was “Jewish blood is not cheap!” In fact, Jewish blood IS NOT cheap but there is a time and place for everything. This march was not it. The march was organized to address the inexplicable lack of police response to the increase of violent crime in our community over the last three years. These crimes affect all residents of Crown Heights alike.
Since the riots, which might not have turned out the way they did if not for outside influence, provocateurs that were bused in; we have lived in harmony with our black neighbors who suffer from many of the same crimes that we do.
“No justice, no peace” is a slogan that might be heard at a rally organized by Al Sharpton. When Jews march, one expects to hear, “There is no peace and we want justice!” But the ones who were screaming were young teens with no adult guidance, so who can blame them. Then again that may be the real issue that this community needs to address (but that’s for another time).
Now is the time for us all to come together and embrace our neighbors, black and white, and in unity demand that the city officials address our grievances. That is the only way we will accomplish anything.

before we unite as a community let’s clean up our own backyard FIRST and unite as the Chabad Lubavitch community – the rest will fall into place.
But then again it’s much easeier to shift the problem, isn’t it?

your comments are very true and also very politically correct.
your obsevation is lacking in its fundamental base. and that is prior to the incident with the black youth beaten by a jewish member of our neighborhood, our calls were for more police protection of the neghborhood, and a call on the police to record all the crimes that occur. this way the statistics will show what actually happens in our neighborhood.
but after that incident the police and the DA and other painted our neighborhood as being the aggressors agaisnt our black neighbors. by conveneing a grand jury and other things. so now our cry is we want “equal” protection and the same response from all.
our so called leaders stood with the so called leaders from the black community and then they all stabbed us in the back. when we get some extra protection they complain behind our backs.
so mr abrahamson get of your rightous horse and smell the coffe. you sound like a polititian and someone who things the world is pure and innocent and if only would speak to them they would stop ……..

before we can present a united form with all the residents of crown height (white and black) we need to be united our selves
and that would solve 99% of the problems
we need
1) united leadership from the community council
2) we need united leadership from our rabonim
3) we need united leadership from our patrols
4) we need united leadership from all our schools
5) we need united leadership from our other institutions (merkos 770 shluchim rebbies )

about dov hikind, need for a leader
“Noticeably absent from the march was any of our community leaders from the Vaad Hakohol.”
this was a statement written in a past article about this fridays march.
Noticeably there was all (most) of the vaad hakahol at the meeting with Dov Hikinds
but the meeting sounded to me more like a way to tell all present that the crime problem is not our leaders fault but the fact that their are 2 differant safty patrols in Crown heights.
and Dov did a good job by telling a HALF of a story with regards to him meeting both groups, he said that one said they are willing to even back down as heads of the organization while the others have yet to make any peace agreement. when asked why? and what did the other organization say? he said its not important to disscuss, leaving a bad tast in everyones mouth the words of hatered and seperation of our comunity after this meeting waas so tremendos that i feel that the entire meeting was about uniting was not achieved and i think that DOv Hikinds has some difficult questions to answer.
a vaad hakahol that has streigth should be formd. a vaad that have a entire comunity backing is the answer. avaad that can face the music is what is needed. a vaad that as a previos commenter has put up is the real couse and the real anwers to our problems.
Our two current comunity patrols can be forced to come togather, can be forced to come up will real truthful answers.
with a new vaad that is not about conections, not about money, not about threats, and fame but about truth, about being open, about being direct, and accoplishings real tasks.
requrements for a new vaad Hakaohol

3. be ready to deal with critisisem.
4. be able to stand up by our own monthly counsel meetings and answer difficult questions.
5. be able to deal with crime crises, and show face even in difficult times.
6. when asked by the police department to help disspers an angry crowd from such a march that took place on friday be able to say,
“NO im not going to even try.”
“I support my comunity in a time of crises”
7. Make ellections happan as they are supposed to, and make a new bylaw that does not allow some one to sit on the vaad for more then 2 terms.
8. Be a doer not a talker, the vaad is not meant to be a place to get credit and fame, but to accomplish goals.
9. have an open book polocy

will the new Vaad Hakohol please stand up?
Chaptz-em
Ten years ago I would have agreed with you.
Unfortunately, the criminal and lowlife element has pretty much co-opted most of the younger generation of the CH Caribbean black community, largely because their leadership is corrupt and because their children go to school with the children of the worst elements from places like Bed-Stuy and East New York. Fine churchgoing men and women from S Vincent or Grenada ended up having their children exposed to the radical preachers who took over their churches and preached hate against Jews for their own political gains.
Add to that the drug problem and what you have is a totally disintegrated community that sank to the levels of its lowest fringe elements.
You can’t teach the Sheva Mitzvos Bnei Noiach to vilde chayos; sadly those of our neighbors who lived by those laws even if they did not know it, are aging and their children did not absorb their parents’ values.
The answer to the problem lies in Williamsburgh, except that we don’t have the bridge over the BQE from which we can throw a few Derrick Nelsons so that “venafal pachad haYehudim aleihem”. It is time for Shmira and Shomrim to get rid of the hotheads who divide them and merge into one, and for everyone who is able to heed the call of Chaptz’em to run out there and give chase when a lowlife dares to do so much as approach a parked car to break a window.
And then we will see if we really do have any black friends, because if we do, they’ll learn what Chaptz’em means and join us.

Well said.
the issue here is a community issue. The entire CH must work together to rid (diminish) the neighborhood of crime.
I agree that the incidents in which jews were harmed needs to be addressed, but the greater concern is that the whole neighborhood is suffering.
constantly raising the issues as racial issues only separates us more, making it harder to solve the intrinsic issue of crime- regular crime, not necessarily racial crime.
Pentax
Oh G-D I love this letter.
Very well said.
This article should be reversed
Sheer stupidity. If our black neighbors “who suffer from the same problems” really cared they would put an end to it and demand more from their youth. Stop making them out to be helpless pathetic people who cannot control their youth. Just like any other community, they CAN, but they CHOOSE not to.
Another issue: Please don’t say that this is not almost-exclusively a Jewish problem or that we should stop crying “antisemitism”. We well should continue that cry since they viscousness of all these past attacks indicates but one thing: it is JEWS who are specifically targeted and being targeted in a specifically heinous way by blacks (stop making this a colorblind issue: I have yet to read of Jews beating Jews – or blacks – senseless or stealing from them or mugging them).
I’m not going to deny that black people in this community have been mugged, assaulted, and harassed by black teens, but you never hear of the viciousness and sheer hatred displayed in such attacks, such as to hit women and children for no reason. So, as noted, the heinousness of the way crime is perpetrated against Jews in this neighborhood clearly indicates that it is actually a Jewish problem – since we are the ones suffering from TARGETED attacks.
Jews are attacked because the scum criminals know that Jews are peaceful and non violent and as such, that we will not attack back and certainly not lethally. Per contra, if the blacks who commit these crimes ever tried to do it to to blacks, they know that the black community would arrange to have them punished (there are no shortage of guns and other weapons in that community). In other words, if a Jew is attacked, it is basically guaranteed that they would never respond with (lethal or any real) force; if a black is attacked by another black, he faces possibly being shot or beaten by their community. Furthermore, if a Jew does in fact decide to fight back in self defense, then the blacks just cry out and get Sharpton and media attention, so only the Jews are in a catch 22, but the blacks can fight back their attackers all they want.
Stop being an apologist for black on Jew crime. Every person, black and Jew alike, knows that Jews in Crown Heights are targeted HATEFULLY by black criminals, and we all know the reasons why, so stop writing as if every person in this community is a bunch of morons. I am not saying that we need not respect our neighbors (I always have been careful to be respectful), I’m saying that we need to call a spade, a spade. Clearly, the violence of attacking innocent women and kids on school buses stems from a hatred these black kids are taught from INFANCY to have against Jews, because of Jealousy of our way of life, PERCEIVED Jewish wealth (I can name hundreds of Jewish families in CH itself living in poverty) and other reasons.
For the record:
I once heard with my own 2 ears how a black councilman of this community said that he could not help fund Jewish things in this community with CITY/TAXPAYER funds, because the black community would start asking him why he was helping “the Jews”!!!!! Could you believe this?!?!?! An elected official sworn by the constitution to defend liberty FOR ALL, said straight out that he could not provide CITY funds to Jews for fear of black anger! And then they wonder why we don’t trust them. Why should we be treated any differently than any other citizens of this city? Our black representatives are LEGALLY required to represent us as well, so why don’t they start doing so? This councilman that I heard also said (I was there, so I saw it and heard it myself, first hand): “The Jews have all the money and the businesses here in CH, so why should I help you?” Unbelieveable that he could have the nerve to say this. So now only black people need extra city money, but Jews with out large families, kosher food, holidays, private tutition should not get help that the black community gets?
To be continued, running out of space…
Should be reversed.....Continued
It is time FOR THE BLACK community to start treating us with respect. They should stop being jealous of us or thinking that we are all rich. We are people just like you and are entitled to equal protection under the law and equal treatment in every way as fellow human beings. We suffer the same difficulties with jobs, and the economy, and share many other human problems. Maybe when someone stops trying to suck up to the blacks but instead CHALLENGES THEM to start teaching THEMSELVES and THEIR youth to treat and see Jews as equals, all this violence and crime would stop. But, unfortunately, I doubt any black resident or leader in this community has the guts to stand up for, and with the Jews who are being targeted and who suffer in this community. If such a leader would speak out, he would be abused and outcasted from the black community as not “standing with them” since according to them, you can only stand with the blacks if you go by the party line and say everything they do is perfect and all the problems are because of the Jews. Time for the blacks to stop denying the problems in their community and to stand and act like strong people to bring an end to hatred and to educate themselvss and their youth. If only they knew how much Jewish people had been a HUGE part of the whole civil rights movement. Look where it got us?
I once heard that when one of the most weel known European Rebbe’s came to America (I know which one it was, but will not say because I have not verified the story, but I heard it from one of his chassidim) after the Holocaust, he said that the blacks are the next Nazis. When one looks at what has been happening in CH over the past few years to the Jewsih community here and in light of the 1991 black riots where Yankel Rosenbaum HY”D was brutally murdered, it seems that that Rebbe was right on target.
I hope readers will take my comments here and above to heart.

Your list of qualifications for Vaad HaKahal is excellent…especially #2. The humiliation we suffer when we want anything from govt. is colossal. We are a JOKE. Who wants to give anything to Crown Heights with these guys running the place????
I fully understand the reasons, but it is a real pity that women cannot be on the Vaad.
I SAID I UNDERSTAND WHY!!! So don’t get all upset.
Women have less of an ego than men (all this macho cave man stuff is a waste of time, we just get on with it) So we need strong men who can get over the ego/Yichus/$$ and do a decent job. Not criminals, not the unemployed, not bumbling idiots, but hardworking, honest, intelligent, respectable men who care about US, not just themselves & the next photo op.
Are there any here? Let’s name them & get them involved. We definitely need LEADERSHIP right now.

If there was any truth to this letter, that the shvartzeh’s are the victims as well, they would be marching along side us. But they don’t feel that they were victimized, hence their lack of participation in our march on Friday (yes I know there was one or two black guys there, but they were the exception). If they felt victimized, they would share our outrage.

If a spokesman for our community goes on Radio and challenges members of our community who call in to relate personal experiences with the Police, such as the disappearing police reports, and instead of listening to them and offering to help, he basically calls them liars, we need no Sharptons to give us trouble.

I would have loved to come to the demonstration-march but didn’t know about it.
Make another, organized one.
Present very BIG posters (carried by 3 to 4 men) saying: ”One Nation, Under G-d, with liberty and JUSTICE FOR ALL!”
Then another LARGER ONE right next to it, very large: America, Love it or Leave it!
Hit the authorities with the ideals and saying they love, showing them that they are not fulfilling their cherished beliefs.
Ignorance of origination
And really let’s stop using Al Sharptonian rhetoric “no justice no peace” is not a slogan we should use!
THIS SHOULD DO IT
how about this:
get one of the top police officers to dress as a jew and tell him to walk around ch at lets say any time day or night. i am sure we can guaranty him something to happen maybe this will open their eyes. or even get his kid to dress like a jew and send him bike riding around ch.

We definitely have to stop the infighting first.
If the cops, and black leadership see we cant even fulfill our own demands…to be united and treated equally in this neighborhood, why should they take us seriously?
If our rabbis, politicians, and other groups within the Jewish community cant even speak with each other without fist fights and lashon hara then how can expect the others to take us seriously? If they see that we only help Jews on “our side of the fight” then dont be surprised if these people continue to laugh in our faces and only give lip service

I am fed up with leaving all the everyday dirty work to Shomrim and those dedicated chosids who literally leave their warm homes to deal with the creeps those perps. Gotta be more cops on the beat of each street 24 7, we’re not talking of a huge city like Manhattan, we are just talking of a measily New York Avenue to Rochester, St. John’s down to Lefferts, that’s it. Small coverage… DA Hynes, let’s get the ball rolling. If we take justice into our own hands through self defense, it’ll only backfire on us. We pay tons of gelt to city taxes which a major portion goes to police and security depts., so please allocate these funds towards that purpose — but only put out trusty able bodied non-bias cops out there. We don’t want another Falsee Mexican police bribery situation heading our way.

It is very important to say that we are against crime and not against black people.
Some of the black people in my building are extremely nice people and I am proud to have them as neighbors. All residents of crown heights are victims of this latest wave of violence, not just the Jews.
In order to solve this urgent crisis before more innocent people get hurt, we must unite not only within the Jewish community but we must also reach out and unite with all hard working honest people of Crown Heights, regardless of their race or religion.
Hopefully together we can increase private patrols and also turn up the heat on the police department to put more officers on the streets to protect us and to do more to prevent crime before it happens. And also to do everything in their power to catch the villains who have been preying on us.

I agree with you in general, but the truth is, the slogans which were being shouted were more a reflection of peoples sentiments than ignorant chaotic cries which lacked leadership. There were grownups too who were leading some of these slogans. There is another point I would like to make, people fail to mention the amount of time the 12 pesukim were said, I think that did alot to shape the atmosphere of the march, I think it made the Rebbe proud.
There is another thing I would liek to say, and I think this is the most important, CAN’T WE – YIDDEN – JUST GET ALONG. if the people in leadership, of all factions, really cared about the members of the community they would do more to compromise and unite. So to all those in leadership, I beg and cry from the heart, and I am sure I’m speaking for many when I say : PLEASE, PLEASE DO ALL YOU CAN DO TO BRING PEACE AND UNITY WITHIN OUR OWN COMMUNITY!!! DO IT FOR US, DO IT FOR OUR CHILDREN, DO IT FOR THE REBBE, AND DO IT FOR THE WORLD!!!
take back our streets
when i lived in a building in crown heights, my neigbors both blacks, where total anti semites. when i go to lefferts park with my children one mother pretends her children are so righteous when my child who is only 1 happens to sweep by her on the slide. I-M HURTING,
The problem is that the leaders dont care about us. They only care about looking good on tv and making the other side of the fight look bad…even if it means Jews get physically hurt….trust me from experience they dont care.
As a BT, who used to intern on Capitol Hill during the Clinton Impeachment times, I can tell you that the fighting in our community is far worse than even there and then. When the cameras were rolling Dems and Republicans were fighting….When the cameras were off…I saw with my own eyes Dems and Republicans secretly make deals with the other side to help keep the USA running….no joke. I saw a black democratic liberal congressman from Newark basically team up with a hardcore conservative Republican from a very white part of Pennsylvania.
Here we see people are getting mugged, hurt, kids go off the derech, and our leadership smiles for the cameras….but when the cameras are off….they fight each other and try to destroy the neighborhood…while claiming how great and beautiful they are.
There are so many nice wonderful people here in Crown Heights who do so many wonderful things. My family and I were treated so nicely by the majority of you….inviting us for meals, treating us like equals, being patient that we dont even have the education of even a high schooler..and encouraging our involvement in the neighborhood.
Sadly our leadership is trying to undo all that by making noise and creating a huge Hillul Hashem…All while each sides claims they so wonderful.
Love your Fellow Jew
I dont understand why people raise this word of “Achdus” everytime something goes on in the Community. We were always taught that “Charity starts at home”, we must start off with Ahavas Yisroel in our families then with friends et. then we can call upon “Rabonim” or “Mashpiim” to kick in. Its not right that we blame them every time. Leta look back at the last Sicha the Rebbe said on the 25 Adar 5752 “Ahavas Yisroel will break all Barriers”. Then we talk Achdus!!! Come on guys, lets wake up and do it right.

Mr. Sugar should not be the spokesperson for this community. He is a bafoon –
comparing the suffering in Germany to the incidents in Crown Heights is an absolute painful insult to the six million who died and the many who survived. We lose all credibility and respect when we have these comments aired for the world to see/hear. Please get him off the air!

Most of these comments are true signs of Jewish unity. I feel proud being a yid and being a lubavitcher, knowing that there are people who can see past all the garbage.
The answer to this all twofold.
1. To stop ALL violence the answer is looking past our own personal ego. ill be the first to admit i struggle with this problem every moment, which thank G-D i am working on. and..
2. obviously were not praying hard enough for moshiach, cause he is not here yet!

To “this should be reversed”:
I think that this article has an important place on a website that is read by Jews. Your rant about what the black community and black leaders need to do is important, but it shouldn’t negate the necessity of looking at our own community and what we can change. If that is completely ignored (on both sides) we will get nowhere. Think about what you’re doing and imagine if your article got posted on a website that the black community read regularly, and then someone responded with Abrahamson’s article. Just a whole bunch of blame pointing and complaining without any sort of introspection and admittance of self-made problems that will actually promote progress once people manage to swallow their yeshus.
In addition, some of the things you said were completely unsupported, and even after living in Crown Heights for almost a decade I fail to even have a response viscerally that they may be true:
“It is JEWS who are specifically targeted and being targeted in a specifically heinous way by blacks”
-Why? Because you only read Crownheights.info? You didn’t really address that there is crime in Brooklyn to people other than Jews. This is just you being mad that Jews hurt, which is good, but trying to generalize without any backing seems absurd.
“you never hear of the viciousness and sheer hatred displayed in such attacks”
-Uh-oh, the never word. People get mugged on a regular basis, my friend, and it’s vicious and it’s hateful.
“Jews are attacked because the scum criminals know that Jews are peaceful and non violent”
-It frankly scared me, the all-out hatred and proclivity to blind violence I witnessed in many young people that happened to find expression in Friday’s rally. Hatred without a plan, that wasn’t righteous indignation, but something really unhealthy. I have a hard time believing the black community doesn’t notice that.
“he black community would arrange to have them punished”
This could be true but I have never heard of such a thing, and you state it as if it was an undeniable fact. You may have a point here but you lost because it sounds as if you’re making it up. There are a lot of black people here, living all over, and who come from many different places. They aren’t smaller and more connected like the Jews are. they don’t have a volunteer police force.
“after the Holocaust, he said that the blacks are the next Nazis”
-Um, yeah, you are really, really going to need to find some sort of source for that. It sounds completely ridiculous and hateful and unproductive, and once again, playing the Holocaust card completely to our detriment.
Everything else you said I agree with, and you have some really good points, but please, think about what you’re saying, and at least have a pretense on which to substantiate it. And don’t let it distract from real issues the Jewish community needs to deal with.
shterna
How dare you compare the crimes against us jews the same as those of one afrecican american to another. Ever hear a shvartze have 5 teeth knocked out, one being beat uncocious, being murdered, not being drug related or some girl friend related? no. no. no. So don’t ever, ever dare to compare what’s being done to us as JEWS to THEM. The only thing they get a taste of is I would think are hold ups,or the like, but that’s not hate nor antisemetic, so just let’s get that straight. Some of the nicer shvartzes are ashamed of THEIR OWN. How could they not be?
ceo
along with some of the other excellent thoughts and ideas, my thought is that we all need to learn HOW to get along with each other. If a person is a nudge, then learn how to politely get away from them without being abrasive. If a person is not of the same level/belief/hashgafoh (or whatever) as you, then learn to not only tolerate them, but learn to include them and be friendly with them by holding on to your own beliefs and respecting theirs…..even if you know that they don’t know what they’re talking about, respect them. RESPECT period, is Ahavas Yisroel. Learn how to do that. Achdus among us all is possible, the Rebbe made us a bracha for that from HKBH and it can be. This is eomething we can all do, no matter how busy we are.
CH’ER
Do now there are cops on every corner. Thank you. They still aren’t stopping the attacks, but for the first time in my 10 years of driving in NY, they pulled me over and gave me a ticket. Over the past day I must have seen at least 10 Jews in Crown Heights getting tickets. It seems like the police are saying if you bother us, we will bother you.
Milhouse
Why does it matter whether a crime is motivated by “hate” or simply by avarice or plain meanness? When someone is beaten, does it hurt less if the assailant wasn’t an antisemite, and would have done the same to a fellow goy? When someone is robbed, is their loss somehow greater if they were robbed because of who they are than if it was simply because they had what to steal? This is all irrelevant; the crimes must be stopped regardless of their motives.
All this talk of “hate crimes” is just PC drivel. Modern society has got it into its head that “hate” is the one unforgivable sin, and gets all exercised whenever there’s a suggestion that this sin exists in its midst. Murder, robbery, rape, those are merely crimes, and not of interest to the opinion-makers so long as it doesn’t affect them personally, but “hate”, that’s not just a crime, it’s a sin, and the full force of society must be focussed on uprooting it.
This really is a religious thing, which has nothing to do with reason. Boruch Hashem we have a religion of our own, one that we didn’t invent 30 years ago, and we don’t need to adopt anything from this new one that the “thinkers” have invented because they threw out all the old ones. I don’t care at all if a goy is an antisemite. I assume that deep underneath in the “pintele goy” they are all antisemites; that is their nature and it doesn’t bother me.Some of our best friends among the goyim have been open antisemites. May Hashem send us many such antisemites as H.L. Mencken and G.K. Chesterton. So long as they don’t harm anybody, let them not like us. And if they do harm someone, we should be outraged over the harm, and demand justice for that, not for what may have motivated it.
