New Antennas for Sprint/Nextel

Today [Sunday] the service lane on Eastern Pkwy. between Brooklyn & Kingston was blocked off and heavy machinery and cranes were brought in. everyone was wondering what it was for, well since the cell phone company’s Sprint and Nextel merged they were upgrading the antennas so they can support the new system’s. The old computers were replaced with new ones and more antennas were added.

Speaking with some of the residents of the building 706 Eastern Pkwy, where the antennas were being installed, they had expressed concern that these antennas disperse harmful radiation, one of them even went and researched and came up with a research study that shows actual harm that they can do. (everything is just a Google search away).

More to the story and pictures in the Extended Article.

And speaking with the executives of the company that were on the jobsite had said that there is no harmful radiation whatsoever and that the resident are just “whining”. Whatever the case really is, the FCC says its safe and if you still do have a problem with the antennas you can contact the FCC and/or the city, and if enough of the residents complain they can get them removed. There were buildings which the residents had complained and had them removed.

we have heard that a community in Monsey took the cell phone company to court and one. This is a hazard to our children and to the whole neighborhood. We all should mobilize and prevent landlords from increasing their income by endangering our children and our communicty.

does this mean all those community members who have nextell won’t get cut off in the middle of thier converstaions while talking on thier phones in Crown Heights??

how far is it "safe" to live near a building with those antenas up there! other building here in Crown Heights have them alraedy.

There have been antennas atop 706 Eastern Parkway for years. Now due to the merger between Nextel & Sprint they are increasing the quality/quantity of their antenna stations nationwide to increase performance of their cell phone service. Therefore today they brought new computer servers and better antenna to supplement/replace the ones they used to have atop the building.

Whether or not these antennas do actually cause more damage than a microwave oven in your house. Which BTW if you ever noticed emits signals that will disrupt a call on a 2.4ghz (cordless) phone, is a hotly disputed topic. There are proven reports gaping extremely between their results. Not to mention we are all using the cellphones themselves which emit the radio-waves right into your ears, and cordless phones, blue-tooth, wifi, radios, two-way communication devices, televisions, radar traffic devices, computers with their monitors and a host of who knows how many other things floating through the atmosphere which we don’t notice. If you were to research this topic you’d find that the results of the various studies vary greatly depending on the sponsor of the said study, Basically a company or organization will hire a group of scientists to prove a point (i.e. that cellphones are safe or vice-versa), as opposed to discovering an answer (i.e. are cellphones safe).

Therefore depending on who you look too for your information, the results will vary accordingly.

However Most people will agree that your safer without the extra radiation. Never-the-less they may argue that you expose yourself to so much of it daily (risking health for convenience, as is the American tradition), that you have no right to complain about this more than any other offending piece of innovative, convenient machinery.

I do agree though that there should be some form of a community’s’ ability to vote on such issues of whether they are willing to forgo the convenience of such towers (having good cellphone reception) and the like for the sake of their health (not having all the possible side effects of the radiation). Especially being that some of the antennas face Oholei Torah (- a large children’s school), where the children are exposed everyday for 6-14 hours depending on their age to these waves.
According to some reports however ground radiation levels are extremely low compared to those that in the direct path of the antennas waves, such as the Oholei Torah building which rises up enough to be at the same level as the antenna. A single land-owner should not necessarily be allowed to make that decision for us based on his lust for he extra $50,000.00 a year, or whatever the benefit to his budget surplus would be. It would be similar to playing (music) with whatever kind of profanities you wish at 1000db (very very very very loud) in the middle of the night, just because the speakers happen to be situated on HIS rooftop!!!

That house you see in the pictures is actually a "shelter" for all the computer stuff they put up on the roof.

About the reception, who know if it will be better? "nichyeh venireh"

does this mean my verizon wireless phone will get better or worse service??

all of Crown Heights is G-d forbid in danger. Just because one can not see what these towers are doing does not mean they are not causing damage to our health.

At 706 Eastern Parkway there have been numerous deaths and serious health issues since the cell phone towers have been installed. May people in the building today are not well from these towers.

We as a community have an obligation to work together to get all of them taken off the building and out of our holy city.

Dont be fooled. This is very serious.
