Squatters Cause Rubbish Fire in Vacant Building

Crown Heights, Brooklyn — At around 10:40 this morning a fire broke out in the vacant Colel Building on Union Street. Firefighters arrived at 1451-1453 Union St within moments of the call and began battling the fire and placing it under control soon thereafter.

More pictures in the Extended Article.

The buildings began undergoing construction over 4 years ago where they were partially demolished and converged into a single large building. For the past 2 years there has not been any construction done on the building or the lot.

The area became home to some of Crown Heights and 770’s homeless characters, they made themselves rooms from rubbish and debris in the building, this which had somehow caught fire.

Neighbors have complained in the past about the fact that the construction has stopped and attracted the homeless people while other complained about rats due to all the garbage and debris in the yard.

B”H there was no injuries and everyone got out in time.

Maybe now Merkos will build the kollel. If they don’t I am sure someone would buy that double house.

  • Squatters

This poor homeless are now without a “roof” over their heads. If you are able to host one of this people in your basement or your son’s bedroom while they are in camp, please let us know by posting a comment in this site and we will contact you.
    Thank you so much.

If I would have known earlier, I would have been there with my steaks and a bottle of ketchup! And then on to the ice cream store, (where all of our holy youth congregate) for some great parve chocolate chip in a sugar cone. mmmm

  • Kolel Wife

while we’re talking about Kolel i would like to bring up that the Kolel yungerleit have been suffering through this sweltering heatwave WITHOUT AIR CONDITIONING because the a/c is broken. They have had to learn in different places and even Rabbi Heller had to leave.
I believe that around $10,000 is needed.
    Any generous readers?

if u really want take the homeless ur self dont wait for others 2 do it! they shouldnt have been living in such a way 2 begin with. u should have taken care of them before there was a fire. y should they be living in a place that is not heated in the winter and no a.c. in the summer? and i dont think any 1 wants some one sleeping in their sons bed because when their son comes back the man wont want 2 leave cuz he doesnt have any where 2 go and who wants a stranger walking around their house all night and day? and whats if they want to go out at night or for a day like visiting day?

  • :(

why doesnt evryone see this as a good thing. well true the building is now demolished, but maybe its a time for the community to get together and help these poor homeless people out. maybe this was supposed to happen to shed some attention on people less fortunate then we are. well im glad that there were no injuries. but its still terrible to hear that their building process had to have this kind of distruption

  • Tzedaka starts at home.

Were any of the homeless Yidden? I thought that it’s all a joke. I have no interest in helping the homeless goyim – except to point the way out of CHts for them.

    To Kolel Wife…

what about the pathetic $250 a month your husband (& my son in law) get to live on?? You’re right it must be very nasty up there with no AC, but I’d like to see Kolel Yungerleit get a decent stipend so they don’t have to struggle, especially when so many of them have little babies & overworked wives.

If they build a fancy new place maybe they should start paying a living wage too.

Maybe these homeless people sell drugs to our children?
maybe it is time whe ship them out of our community.
We all know who they are.
just because they wear a yechi yarmulke doesn’t mean we cant ship them out of here to a different neighborhood.

  • Hard Working, Schnorrer Hater

I think all the homeless should get a Frikin Job, they sit outside and schnorr their whole lives, by us giving them, we encourage them, and b/c we can’t turn them down, we have to give them something right? I think we should carry a roll of pennies with us, and when one of them come over asking for money, we should give them a penny or two, and say GET A JOB!!!!

We have to stop encouraging it.

And those who truly need money, are the ones who are shameful and will not ask, the organizations should reach out to them, and help them with what they need, and we should fund the organizations.

I know that there are alot of good ppl and organizations, but I don’t give any money to organizations that take a 49% cut, I think it’s disgusting that they make a living off our hard earned money, we work hard and expect everything to go to tzedaka, and I hail those who take their time not for the money but for the mitzvah.

I ignore every schnorrer that asks for money, these non jewish Russian Freaks, make probably equivelent of 50-60K a year TAX FREE!!!

Don’t give them anything more then a Nickel.

  • we all have 1 father

how can you say stuff like this about jews??

who cares if they are homeless??

after 120 years is it going to matter if you were homeless or a millionare??
