Large Fire Breaks Out in a Crown Heights Home

Crown Heights, Brooklyn – At 7:45 this evening a fire broke out in the second floor of a Jewish home on Crown St. The incident began in a section of damaged wiring in the ceiling which caused a light bulb to suddenly exploded and instantly set fire to everything around it.

More pictures in the Extended Article.

The worker and all the residents immediately evacuated the home and called 911. Firefighters arrived on scene within moments and began working on putting out the fire. The entire block filled with thick white smoke and a column of black smoke was visible for blocks.

While battling the blaze the fire extended into the cockloft and broke through the roof of the house and flames were visible. The fire was deemed under control within 20 minutes of the firefighter’s arrival.

Due to the intense heat of the blaze firefighters were forced to cut large holes in the roof of the home and break lots of windows, the next door house sustained significant smoke damage along with broken windows and cuts in their roof as well.

Three firefighters sustained light injuries while battling the blaze and were transported to Kings County Hospital for checkups and treatment, there were no injuries to any of the residents or civilians.

To the family; it is known that after a fire comes great brocho, may your family know no more grief!

And to our beloved FireFighters; Thank You! Thank You for risking your lives running into burning buildings while everyone is running out!

I just wanted to comment on Ezra’s comment above. You couldn’t have described the situation better regarding all the brochos that will surely come after a fire…and may the family know of no more grief.
Also, that the firefighters literally risk their lives to save the lives of others. Thank you Ezra, for describing things so well, as you did.

hey i was the absolute first one there. even before the first fire truck came. i feel so bad. it should be a kapara i guess.

  • Block dweller

I live on that block and only heard fire trucks coming- I saw nor smelled any smoke.

  • CN

Yes, wealth follows a fire, but don’t forget to cite to the Tzemach Tzedek who taught this to us.

  • Basya

I am so sorry for the family. I hope nothing wss lost and that the cleanup will come easy. How terribly scary for everyone. Why are their photos of children laughing and smiling? This is no laughing matter! (Wonderful photographs though of all the firemens’ work! Good job!)

  • Exasperated

I know you have to be a classified writter to post on crownheights.info But why do you have to write such comments as “Amazing Pictures!!!”, “you are the only site with pics of actual flames” – Nebech! A house goes up in flames and what do you hear: “you are the only site with pics of actual flames”! A little hartz a little sechel!

  • Chaya

By the way, after the firemen left another fire broke out in the same home, and the fire dept. came back.

  • Shmuli

I love this! There are only good comments here on this story.

Although its unfortunate for the fire; the Rebbe would always remind us that after such dizasters comes blessings and riches. May you have it in the fullest extent of the word.

As usual everyone is commenting on the great pictures. Although I love your pictures, particularly the ones of fires, I was begining to get bored of the same pictures at every fire. But I think the new twist to the pictures adds something special – I mean the pictures of the kids and members of the community at the fire – an interesting perspective.

  • CHer

i was watching, and boy, the fire was really enormous. Tons and tons of smoke!
May the family know no more grief and recover quickly from this ordeal.

in response to all the comments in favor of the great coverage. I am not a resident of Crown Heights, and before i came to crown heights a year ago, i discovered this website. I thought that when walking down kingston i’d see crashes, muggings and shomrim chaps all day! Maybe we should start also posting on the great school programs and new GOOD occurnces in 770. May there be no bad things to cover to begin with.

    Moshiach Now!

I am happy to know that someone will be rich very soon. (after sraife, you become rich!) May it happen soon.

  • A FRIEND

Whats the purpose of having so many pictures?
Also if for any reason you don’t want to say the name of the family so why posting the pictures which obviously reveal the owner?
The main thing is we all wish them the brocho the Rebbe allways gives in such cases:
YEKUYAM BOHEM MAAMAR KEDOSHEY ELYON (NOCH A SREIFE VERTMEN REICH (REICHER))

  • feel so bad

Terrible……… this family just renovated their home, I dont even want to think what would be if this was in the middle of the night!! The main thing is that everyone is okay.

  • ch

I don’t understand the excitement about showing these pictures, especially the ones with smiling kids as if this was some great show at a carnival. Do you realize that there is a family here that has just suffered extensive damage to their home? Is this really the appropriate time to show off your reporting and photography skills?

  • out-of-towner

oy, there’s not only the house that caught on fire, the one next door sustained lots of damage, also.

so i vote that the brochos go to BOTH families!

yasher koach to the FDNY! great pics, webby!

  • Unfortunately still waiting

‘Noch Ah Sreifa Vert Men Reich’, but unfortunately that seems true only if you had good fire insurance.

  • crazy

I have to agree. I think the pix of smiling kids should be removed asap. Two homes sustained major damage. It’s not a laughing matter!

  • YDM

I urge you to keep the photography for Simches. I’m truly appalled!!! GREAT PICTURES??? Who speaks like that after someone just lost a home to flames? Atrocious! Wonder if anyone spoke so excitedly when this family made a wedding? I hope you regret the fact that you posted private and what should be personal pictures of a wonderful family, as I know them to be. I recommend you to ask for remorse for the additional pain you’ve caused!!!

    Shalom Chavairim;
Behold…a miracle! Everyone is well. May the families remain safe and know that they shall, in deed become richer and (even) closer to Hashem.
Years ago, I too had my home destroyed by fire, it burnt to the ground.
The details are quite dramatic & the story…awesome! However, it shall remain private at this time. I can tell you this…My life was saved by the hand….B”H. Thereafter, My sons Ephraim & Aaron & I became (even) closer…& a new & more beautiful house was built.
FYI: Everone should know to check their insurance policy for two very important words, within & added to the “Full Repalcement” clause…“TO CODE.”

Bruchos to you my friend & I shall see you for the Shabbot! B”H

  • nieghbor

it was a disaster. I was there, it was not the greatest at all. I only wish blessings to the family.

  • FlatbushChabadObserver

    Webby,

The pictures are super. The sites like chaptzem and others I know first hand are jealous (in a kosher way) of your skills. CH really has it made.
The comments are basically proper. The ones asking to remove the kids smiling…are you a nuts?
I mean when you were a kid, standing by a fire scene, would you do anything but smile to the camera? These are our kids for cryin out loud. Did you expect them to stand around snd say tehillim? When I was young I jumped on the ruck with my friends while they were spritzing ‘n all – FDNY are the freindliest guys in the country.
Some of you folks need to take a chill pill.

That said S.D. is a truly stand up guy as is his family and I really hope they recover quickly, tons of mazel after this nebach. same with next door A’s sorry for you guys too.

  • goldiegross

I live right across the st. and my friend was there to. The whole entire Crown Heights was there!

On behalf of my wife and myself I wish to express appreciation for the vast amount of outpourings of offers of assistance that we received. It truly instilled in us a great sense of chizuk and proved that push come to shove our kehilla can demonstrate an achdus surpassed by none.We give shevach to Hashem that no one was hurt and that the tragic event which occured was one where we only had to endure materialistic losses.
