Fuel Explosion in a Mechanic Shop

At around 9:10 this morning there was an explosion in a Mechanic shop on Troy Ave between East New York and Lefferts, the area quickly filled with smoke and flames were visible from inside the shop. FDNY arrived on scene only moments after the fire broke out and quickly raised the fire to a 2nd alarm, brining a lot more firefighters and EMS workers to the scene.

It took around 30 minutes to completely subdue the fire during which the school Bnos Menachem who is adjacent to the rear of the mechanic shop began filling with smoke. Numerous Shomrim members who were on scene quickly evacuated the school in an orderly fashion. Some children were seen in their Purim costumes.

One of the workers in the mechanic shop said that he was changing a fuel pump on a car when all of a sudden there was a spark, and he quickly put out the fire and turned around and then the ‘whole place just exploded’. Miraculously there were no serious injuries.

The administration of the Public School located diagonally across the street from Bnos Menachem welcomed the students and faculty into their auditorium while waiting to be able to go back into their own building and preventing the students from waiting out in the cold. About an hour later, at around 10:00am the students and teachers were allowed back into the building.

    The whole school walked to the end of the block and went to Lefferts Park. The Public School on the corner saw everyone in the cold and invited us in to wait in the auditorium. We really appreciated their kind hospitality. They even gave us a mike and we had an assembly with pesukim from all the girls, 2 1/2 yr olds through 12th grade, was beautiful! When we got back to the building B”H there was only smokey rooms and nothing ruined!

    Thanks to the diligence and quick response of members of our faculty, all the students went out in a quick fashion. We were grateful for the shomrim members who came and made sure no was left in the building. Everyone was sitting in the warm public school auditorium within 15 minutes. Of course our utmost thanks goes to the Aibeshter that everyone is safe.

  • student

    Don’t you just love it how all of these Bnos Menachem girls, who are leaving comments, young and old, have access to the internet?

    When I was younger, if i was on the internet, oh boy, did i have a permenant appointment with my bedroom for like a week.

    GO CROWN HEIGHTS

    it wasnt that cold this morning, remember?

    cold enough… especially for little kids in the park for 20 minutes

  • Mom on the scene

    The little ones were taken almost directly to the public school. They were only outside for a few minutes.

  • member of CH

    B”H it was a nice day but to mother in Ch- when there is a fire you leave the building right away, no you don’t grab anything, but take kids out…the building was smoking up they did the right thing and just got up and left. No one knew where the fire was and the condition if it spread yet…The building was way too smokey to go back to get the jackets. By the time the kids got to the corner, they were invited in to the Public School. Baruch Hashem all worked out so smoothly.

  • yossi

    my kid was outside with no coat.i,d rather that then taking seconds to play with coats when there is a FIRE. good thinking

    As crazy as this may sound, you now need to BOIL A POT OF COFFEE in each smoky room ASAP before the soot bonds to the walls and makes the smoky smell irreversible. I know this works because unfortunately I have had occassion to use it twice, and somehow, the coffee sucks up the smoke smell. But it only works if you pour at least half the jar into the pot, not just a spoonful. Let it boil, then let the pot(s) sit overnight in the room in question, and by the morning, the smell should be all gone. Spill out the coffee and you’re done!

  • FREEZING IN CH

    to the mother in CH
    IT ALSO TAKES A SECOND FOR A PERSON TO GET TRAPPED IN A FIRE. BETTER TO FREEZE IN EVEN FREEZING WEATHER BUT TO BE ALIVE AND UNBURNT TO BE ABLE TO FEEZE….

  • bnos menachem student

    att curious: yes there is a fire alarm but when we were told to exit, it was b4 there was smoke in the building, a staff member saw what happened and quickly told us to leave the building and after we left, the smoke alarm went on.

  • bm student

    first of all, the kids lives r more important then taking their coats out…they can be cold for a few minutes. and anyways, i was there and the preschool did not even go to lefferts park they went straight to the public school…and even some got driven by the bus.

  • To Curius:

    Ther IS a fire alarm. By all fire drill practices, the alarm goes off and we all know where to exit. The only problem was, that by a real fire, the alarm for some reason or another, didn’t go off.

    ok ok ok …. here ye here ye;

    new rules;

    from now on all girls must bring everyday;

    a yellow raincoat over the knees length.

    a lollypop and a banana for emergency

    smoke bonnet

    nose plugs with at least 5 feet of rope

    ear muffs – preferably yellow

    waterproof chitas

    all this should be attached to child at all times. preferable method would be a fanny pack.

    you girls are great – happy purim!

    the littel kids, for the littel time they were in the park were all heated up enough . they were going on the slides and playing in the park. it was us,the older girls that were freezin, we were fasting and tired{like always} and cold!!!!!!!!!!!!!atleast the fire took our mind off the fast alittel and gave us an excuse to go home b/c when we got back into school, it stunk reallly badly!

  • bmnick

    att mother in ch: there is a big diffrence btw. being warm and being safe, when we were told te leave the building immediatly, we LEFT we didnt think to bring our coats. our first thought, was that GET OUT OF HEAR ALIVE!! if we had anymore more time, im sure that the teachers would get coats, i hope you understand

  • ATT: Irony in a Can

    I’m sure you find it very interesting but did you ever think about the fact that anybody could sign anybody’s name so it doesnt necessarily mean those are all students using the internet. Anyway think about the days when you were a kid…but dont forget that times have changed!

    WHAT ARE YOU DOING ON THE INTERNET??!! AND WHO SAID THAT ALL THOSE COMMMENTERS ARE FROM BNOS MENACHEM. AND IF THEY ARE SO WHO CARES!? IM SURE THAT THE PARENTS KNOW WHAT THERE DOING- NOW PARENTS COULD CHECK WHAT THEIR CHILDREN DO ON THE INTERENT

  • To Dallas Yid:

    did it ever occur to you that if a kindergardener carries all that, it weighs more then the kid herself???
    anyways, lots of it is unnecessary.
    for ex: yelow raincoat
    chitas,etc
    ps: what’s the point of bananas & lollies?
    pss: i, as a br student, make up all rules…

  • Passerbyer

    I arrived very soon after the fire, after seeing the commotion at the end of the block and I was impressed as to how well the entire situation was handled. The students looked relaxed albeit a little cold. Yasher Koach to all the people who had this situation so tightly under control.
