An early morning fire on Shabbos has left dozens homeless and sent several firefighters to the hospital. The fire broke out just after 2 a.m. in a six-story apartment building on Eastern Parkway and Rochester Avenue in Crown Heights. It took nearly 200 firefighters over two hours to get the fire under control, but not before it destroyed 14 apartments.
The Red Cross says it’s providing shelter to over a dozen families.
Five firefighters were treated at Brookdale Hospital for minor injuries.
Investigators say they believe the fire started in a shaft and then made its way to an attic, but the cause remains under investigation.
